About this position at Lightspeed LA This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and passionate Lead Multiplayer Designer to join our in-house team and help create world-class multiplayer experience on a new and exciting open-world AAA game. We are seeking someone who will bring passion to the role, collaborating closely with the local design leadership group and our partner studio, to help create an ambitious, unique and epic experience. Below is an outline of responsibilities and some of the qualities we look for in the ideal teammate. Responsibilities: Provide guidance and feedback to (a partner studio) Lead the conceptualization and design of innovative multiplayer gameplay features and mechanics that align with the vision of the game. Act as the primary point of contact for the remote partner team, providing guidance, feedback, and collaborating effectively to ensure the successful implementation of multiplayer systems. Develop and maintain complex multiplayer systems including player interactions, matchmaking, progression, competitive modes, and cooperative gameplay. Fine-tune gameplay parameters, rules, and mechanics to ensure a balanced and engaging multiplayer experience for players of varying skill levels. Champion an exceptional multiplayer user experience by identifying potential pain points, addressing player feedback, and iterating on gameplay systems accordingly. Team Leadership: Lead a team of multiplayer designers from our partner studio, providing mentorship, guidance, and fostering a collaborative and creative work environment. Global Communication: Facilitate communication between teams in different time zones, ensuring that everyone has access to the information and resources they need to perform their tasks effectively. Use various communication tools to bridge geographical gaps. Create comprehensive design documentation that communicates multiplayer mechanics, systems, and features effectively to the broader development team. Conduct regular playtests and provide constructive feedback to improve multiplayer gameplay quality and identify areas for enhancement. Requirements: Exceptional understanding of multiplayer psychology and what makes social fun and engaging. Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in game design, with at least 5 years focused on multiplayer game design for AAA titles. A robust portfolio showcasing your contributions to multiplayer gameplay in shipped titles, highlighting innovative mechanics, systems, and player experiences. Proven experience in leading and mentoring a team of designers, fostering creativity, and maintaining a positive work environment. Strong understanding of game development tools and engines, with the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers to implement gameplay features. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of clearly articulating complex design ideas and collaborating across disciplines. Demonstrated ability to identify gameplay issues and provide effective solutions, particularly within a multiplayer context. Comfortable working in a dynamic and evolving development environment, with the capacity to adapt to changing project needs. Traveling to different offices and participate in cross-team initiatives. Desirable Skills & Experience: Understanding of multiplayer networking concepts, including synchronization, latency mitigation, and server-client architecture. Experience with live service games, including post-launch content updates, events, and ongoing player engagement strategies. Some familiarity with scripting or programming languages commonly used in game development. Previous involvement in open world game projects, understanding the unique challenges and opportunities they present for multiplayer design. A passion for staying engaged with the gaming community, understanding player preferences, and leveraging insights to enhance multiplayer experiences. Actual pay is based on market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A sign on payment, relocation package, and restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, as well as other medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the specific position offered.
