If you’re looking to make the best co-op games in the world, you’ve come to the right place. We're proud to have some of the best game makers and collaborators in the industry within our four walls. What's more, we're a fun bunch of game developers, who love to indulge in our passion for video games together. Our games are not for everyone. Are they for you?
We are now looking for a Writer
Who you are:
We are now looking for a full-time writer to join the Narrative Team for Helldivers 2. Helldivers 2 is a live service, satirical, 3rd-person cooperative shooter. The person we seek has demonstrated a high level of writing in video games and/or in comedy.
You can quickly adopt the satirical tone of Super Earth to deliver succinct, punchy writing that is tonally consistent, pushes the satire forward, and includes jokes that are simultaneously clear and understated. We also want your help coming up with interesting, fresh, funny ideas for evolving the ongoing, live galactic war narrative.
Your primary qualifications:
- Significant experience as a writer and proven sensibilities for satire or comedy
- Around 2 years of experience within the games industry, preferably in a narrative or writer position
The following are great bonuses:
- Experience writing branching narratives, especially in interactive media such as video games or tabletop roleplaying games
- Narrative design experience
- Excellent documentation and organizational skills for things such as review docs, text string tracking and branching narrative tracking
What you'll do
You would be joining the Narrative Team, working closely with the Senior Writer, Narrative Lead, and Game Master, as well as with members of other disciplines as necessary. You would be primarily responsible for writing on-screen text, such as item descriptions and short “dispatches” to the player base, particularly for things with a quick turnaround. You would also be contributing to ideation and brainstorming for long-term story direction and “Major Orders,” which are effectively community-wide quest chains.
You’ll be expected to write in a variety of formats and tones, such as news scripts, propaganda posters, military orders, humorous item descriptions, and to-the-point mission instructions. You’ll both give and receive feedback, working in the Narrative Team to ensure consistent tone, deliver comedy, and craft impactful story moments for the player community.
Here’s a more comprehensive list of potential responsibilities:
- Brainstorm ideas for new quest chains
- Aid in ideation and construction of branching quest chains
- Write on-screen text as needed, including:
- Major Orders and Dispatches from Super Earth High Command (effectively in-world quest descriptions and outcomes)
- Names & descriptions for new items: weapons, stratagems, armor, etc.
- Mission descriptions and directions
- In-game war history
- In-game encyclopedia
- Marketing videos
- In-game posters
- Contribute to worldbuilding and lore
- Contribute to the overall narrative design of the game and the “Galactic War”
How to apply
If you think that this position matches your background and skills, we would love to hear from you. Please submit your CV in English as soon as possible.
- Submit up to 10 pages of writing samples. Submit whatever you feel represents you best, and best demonstrates your ability to write for this project! Many types of writing are acceptable, but as a guide, here is a list in roughly descending order of relevance:
- Comedic video game writing for a published (or, let’s face it, canceled-in-development) game
- Non-comedic video game writing
- Comedy writing of the following forms: pilot, film, spec, web series, sketch, short story, play
- Comedic or satirical writing of another form (late night-style monologue, satirical news article, or anything else)
- Non-comedic writing of the following forms: pilot, film, spec, web series, sketch, short story, play
- Non-comedic writing of any other form
We interview candidates continuously and hire when we find a good fit.
Application process:
After that, the initial applicant pool will be narrowed to a smaller group, which may be asked to complete a brief writing test consisting of the kind of writing they would be performing in this role. That test will ask for no more than 500 words with a 96-hour turnaround.
