At Naughty Dog, a Visual Effects TD might do several of a wide variety of technical tasks ranging from creating technically challenging visual effects to creating tools to improve workflow. You are not expected to be proficient in all areas the position might include. You should be able to fulfill SOME BUT NOT ALL of the responsibilities, requirements, and skills below. However, you should be able to grow into any of the areas listed.
Responsibilities:
Candidate should fulfill some of these responsibilities, and should be able to grow to fulfill any of them.
- Use innovative thinking to solve challenging VFX problems
- Learn about relevant aspects of rendering and particle runtime systems
- Learn about other departments, such as lighting, to help solve cross-departmental problems
- Develop techniques that the VFX team can replicate to create cutting edge effects
- Develop tools to streamline artist workflow
- Develop tools to expand artist capabilities
- Work with engineers to expand our runtime effects capabilities
- Troubleshoot problems
- Evaluate game performance and determine how to optimize
- Create custom gpu effects using compute shaders
- Create or add to shaders
- Write helpful documentation
- Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed
Requirements & Skills:
- Experience creating technical art or FX in a game engine or professional experience in post production
- Oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and find motivation
Bonus Skills:
Candidate should have some of these requirements, and should be able to gain any of them.
- Houdini
- Python
- Experience in a shader language or with node-based shading
- Experience creating offline effects and simulations
- Experience creating in-game effects

At SIE, we consider several factors when setting each role’s base pay range, including the competitive benchmarking data for the market and geographic location. Please note that the base pay range may vary in line with our hybrid working policy and individual base pay will be determined based on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location.
In addition, this role may be eligible for bonus and SIE’s top-tier benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, matching 401(k), paid time off, wellness program and coveted employee discounts for Sony products.

The estimated base pay range for this role is listed below.
$75,400 — $113,000 USD
