UX/UI Lead

Harebrained Schemes is looking for an experienced and versatile UX/UI Lead to guide our design efforts on an unannounced project. You’ll collaborate with the Game Director and HBS team to establish and then advocate for the high-level UX/UI direction of the game. If you are a thoughtful collaborator, with a deep understanding of—and appreciation for—player experiences in tactical and strategy games, we’d love to talk with you.

This is a full time, management role that can be fully remote for candidates able to work Pacific Time hours with preference given to those who are available to work on-site two days a week in our hybrid Kirkland, WA office.

All interviews will be done virtually.

What You’ll Do

  • Collaborate with the Game Director and other stakeholders to concept and implement a great user experience for all aspects of the project - from UX pillars to wireframes to final in-engine assets.
  • Communicate the goals of the user experience with other team members from Design, Engineering, and Art departments.
  • Manage and mentor the UI/UX team, helping to create a healthy culture of collaboration and respect between team members.
  • Work with the Art Director to establish a strong graphic design language for a project's user experience that communicates key information.
  • Develop the UI visual style through from project start to ship, ensuring that the UI experience remains communicative, cohesive, and captivating.
  • Author shipping-quality UI art assets, and manage additional work (icons, etc.) from external vendors when required.
  • Work directly within the studio’s Unity pipeline to import and build out assets for Engineering implementation.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Design and UX teams to iterate and improve the overall UI experience based on feedback and testing - throughout the product's development and continuing into post-launch.

What You’ll Bring

  • A deep understanding of UX design concepts and best practices, especially in the tactical combat and strategy genres.
  • You have the ability to anticipate the player’s experience during the complex interactions that make tactical and strategy games challenging and fun without becoming overwhelming.
  • You can analyze design documentation, be curious about player goals, present ideas, and work across disciplines to bring gameplay to life so that it communicates the right information for the strategy player at the right time while remaining scoped for implementation.
  • You can work quickly in interface design tools such as Figma to help the team iterate on concepts.
  • You have a command of visual design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and AfterEffects.
  • You can shepherd UI and UX through the entire pipeline, from vision to in-engine assets.
  • You can learn, or have prior experience, working directly in an engine such as Unity or Unreal (our projects are in Unity).
  • You enjoy playing complex titles, like the ones released by Harebrained Schemes and Paradox Interactive.

Nice to Haves

  • Experience shipping tactical or strategy titles on PC and console.
