Technical Writer, Defence
Improbable has created SpatialOS: a networking solution combining low latency, tools for faster iteration, and a ready-to-go architecture capable of supporting innovative games. Now the Improbable Defence division, building on the backbone of SpatialOS, has combined world class scientific modelling, market leading AI, mission specific user interfaces and a uniquely flexible and secure deployment model to create a powerful simulation platform tailored to the needs of the military.
Our mission? To enable the most realistic and effective military simulations ever experienced, making defence users more effective on operations and decreasing the cost of military preparedness.
Your mission
is to make sure that our customers, partners and users have the information and resources they need to use our platform and related tooling successfully. From getting started, to completing integrations, installation, and administration across a single synthetic environment, your documentation will be essential to our success.
You’ll focus on user-facing documentation, but might also work on command-line help and support in our web UIs, blog posts, proposals, technical diagrams and more. You’ll create, update, review, reorganise, and remove documentation, in collaboration with partner engineering, UX research, project management, software engineers, QA engineers, product managers and product marketing. We have a strong culture of developers contributing to our docs, so collaborating with developers on what they write is a big part of the job.
On a day to day basis, you'll work with different engineering teams across the Defence platform and products, alongside one other tech writer. You'll also be part of a supportive cross-company team of tech writers, who frequently share learnings and expertise.
Areas for impact
- Creating comprehensive, accurate, and easy to use set of digital user documentation covering everything from getting started through advance usage and administration of our platform technologies and support tooling.
- Ensuring digital user documentation is accurate and up to date with a quickly evolving set of product offerings.
- Customers, partners, and users are happy and feel supported while using our platform due to the comprehensive documentation.
- Our platform’s ease of use is a strong retention factor, and the user documentation is a key contributor to this success
We'd love to hear from you if you identify with the following:
- Experience of writing digital user-facing documentation.
- Experience working in an agile software development environment.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
- Ability to learn about complex technical topics and explain them clearly.
- Ability to empathise with your target audience, and advocate for them.
- You can quickly grasp complex technical topics and be able to explain them in a democratic way.
- You have a strong team spirit with the humility and maturity to want to help others around you.
- Experience reviewing other people’s writing and giving constructive feedback. (Desirable)
- Experience working in an agile software development environment.
- Demonstrable experience with software version control systems, such as Git. (Desirable)
- Experience in creating step-by-step tutorial-style learning materials. (Desirable)
Nb: While we think the above experience could be important, we can’t predict the future and so we’re keen to hear from applicants that believe they have valuable experience. If you identify with the team & mission, but not all of the suggestions, then please still apply!!
