Mojang is a Microsoft-owned game developer studio based in Stockholm, Sweden. We are best known as the creators of Minecraft, and are currently working on several new games, a movie, a board game, and lots more – all within the Minecraft franchise.

At Mojang we create games, products and services to inspire creativity. As part of that pursuit, we are prepared to take risks. It’s how we grow! We develop games with a strong community focus and put players first in everything we do. Our games are built for everyone, because we believe in demonstrating equality and not just talking about it.

To help us create amazing things, we have built an equally amazing studio space. Situated right on the water by Söder Mälarstrand, it’s filled to the brim with all the tools, toys and inspiration required to create world-class entertainment.

But of course, the people of Mojang are what makes this place truly special. When you join, you’ll find yourself in the company of incredibly bright, warm, and creative individuals – all united and working toward a single goal. Come help us achieve it!

As Mojang’s portfolio of games expands beyond our flagship title Minecraft, the services required by those games grows as well. The Franchise Services team aims to provide those services. This team provides online backend services to power everything from in-game events to user account management. In addition, the team provides the library of core UI elements that power both our in-game UI/UX, as well as parts of our web presence. As well, the team is responsible for the Launcher used by the Java Edition of Minecraft (and soon, by Minecraft Dungeons as well). Finally, the infrastructure to support all these services are handled by the team.

As Technical Director for Franchise Services, your primary challenges would be balancing the needs of all games in the franchise, helping each sub-team with their long term vision and road-map, acting as people-manager for the technical leads in the team, and ensuring each team is given the support and resources needed to work most effectively.

While it is normal that a technical director is versed in all the technologies in their organization, the collection of products and services in this team is far beyond what could be expected for almost any director. However, having technical depth in at least several of these areas would be much preferred. Areas of technical concern include web front-end, web back-end, Java, C++, game UI design, and web infrastructure at scale (Azure and its ecosystem preferably).

We would love to hear about your previous experiences leading dozens of developers, and managing wide-ranging demands from a large number of both internal and external partners.

As a senior technical leader at Mojang, we would also love for you to level up the rest of our company, by either mentoring our more junior colleagues, holding demos or talks of the tech that the teams are producing, or any other ways you can impart your experience and knowledge. And as an employee of Mojang, a deep love for Minecraft and its unique place in games is always preferred.

If you feel like this role might be a good fit, you have a calm disposition, an ability to keep track of multiple teams simultaneously, and excellent verbal and written communication skills, we’d love to hear from you.

Mojang strives to be a diverse and inclusive studio and if you think this job sounds like your passion, you are more than welcome to apply, no matter who you are or where you are from.
