Gearbox is on the lookout for a talented Technical Director to help us build a team around a new, original IP-- Come help us define the future of Gearbox Entertainment franchises! This is a rare opportunity to help build a team for a new initiative from the ground up. In this role you will be asked to build a strong, collaborative, engineering team capable of creating an exciting new, AAA, franchise, and then managing that team through the lifecycle of the project.

Responsibilities:

  • Build a high functioning engineering department from the ground up, set it up for continued success
  • Work your peers in other departments to assemble, lead, and motivate a large team consisting of all aspects of game development; this person sets the example as a leader
  • Create and maintain a positive culture across the engineering team and promote a healthy work/life balance
  • Investigate, build consensus, and decide on foundational technology architecture
  • Understand and articulate the tradeoffs of technical choices in AAA game
  • Proactively identify and resolve project risks of all flavors (technical, product, team health, etc.) and manage tradeoffs in technical quality, scope, and schedule
  • Collaborate with central technology teams, operations teams, and external partners – maintaining strong relationships, priority alignment, and technology alignment
  • Motivate, mentor, supervise and support team of engineers with clear and consistent direction
  • Assist in maintaining milestone and general engineering schedules with production team
  • Responsible for quality of all milestone & deliverables as they relate to the engineering department
  • Not afraid to roll up your sleeves and be hands-on with engineering tasks, where needed

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of game development experience, 5+ years of engineering department leadership
  • Shipped one or more AAA title(s) with a Lead or Director credit
  • Deep understanding of the Unreal Engine, with at least one title shipped on it
  • Able to translate broad product and business goals into sound technical solutions
  • Able to operate at multiple abstraction levels, from high level discussions with non-technical customers to understanding and assisting with deep tech challenges
  • Comfort collaborating with a team of leads in all aspects of the creative and technical process.
  • Excellent C++ and OOP skills, and knowledge of scripted game engines
  • Experience in the design and architecture of game systems
  • Experience with developing multiplayer games
  • Passion for cultivating healthy teams who are creatively empowered
  • Excellent communicator and team player -- here at Gearbox we thrive on collaboration and working together to meet our project engineering goals
  • A proven ability to express your ideas and vision through technical documentation in a clear and concise manner
  • Be able to relocate to Austin, Texas area to join the Gearbox team
