Job Title:
Senior Storage Systems EngineerRequisition ID:
R022057Job Description:
Blizzard is actively seeking a full time Senior Storage Systems Engineer to join our Infrastructure Engineering team in Irvine, CA. Your focus will be to build and support Linux-based open source infrastructure which reliably stores and protects the data that powers all of Blizzard’s online games. You are comfortable working in all aspects of systems engineering and administration with a focus on storage: IP networking, scale out open source storage technologies, and strong linux/server administration. While supporting our existing storage infrastructure you will help evolve our team to be a storage service provider for our private cloud environment. Our environment is diverse with a mix of traditional storage and software defined; but in this role you will be focused on supporting scale-out storage systems providing block and object services for Blizzard’s private cloud. As such, you’ll need advanced Linux skills to install, maintain and configure storage software running on commodity server hardware while being extremely comfortable using a CLI.
If you would like to join us on our journey to becoming an extraordinary service provider, read on to find out exactly what kind of engineer we are looking for. We would love to hear from you!
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide analysis, design and direction regarding storage performance and capacity management services of our software defined storage environments
- Compare and contrast multiple storage solutions in detailed proof of concept tests to identify superior solutions
- Design robust storage and backup solutions to meet demanding organizational and application specific SLAs including, but not limited to, HA, RTO/RPO, offsite requirements and disaster recovery to Blizzard owned datacenters or public cloud providers.
- Lead and coordinate the engineering phases of storage solution delivery including planning, design, buildout, testing, procurement, and transition to operational support
- Streamline and automate existing storage administrative processes, improve reliability, and reduce the cost per gigabyte across multiple storage platforms
- Undertake complex projects requiring specialized knowledge of storage technologies, services, and applications
- Data informed approach. Use comprehensive data and metrics collection on performance and reliability aspects of the systems you were responsible for. You will do most of the heavily lifting for this yourself (writing scripts, calling APIs, etc) instead of relying on a vendor-provided solution
- Engage customers (private cloud teams, game teams, SRE) to understand their challenges and collaborate to solve them in creative ways.
REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum 5+ years of experience supporting software defined storage environments with high I/O and throughput production workloads.
- Implement and support scale out block storage (PowerFlexOS, Ceph, LightBits, etc) as well as contributing to design and planning.
- Design, implement, and support deployments of large web scale object storage technologies (Swift, Ceph, Scality, etc)
- Minimum 5+ years of experience working on HPE,Dell, Cisco, or Supermicro servers and large direct-attached storage using linux operating systems as the base OS.
- A deep understanding of Linux systems, in the context of storage, as well as general system tuning and administration with Ubuntu/Debian, CentOS/Rocky/RHEL.
- Minimum 5+ years of experience working in and supporting large scale Linux environments.
- Comprehensive understanding of how storage on a network works, and how to correct network problems to provide high I/O and reliability.
- Ability to perform basic network troubleshooting and administrative tasks in a primarily Cisco environment.
- Working understanding and ability to support a variety of file, object, block network storage protocols over IP including S3,Swift, NFS, SMB, iSCSI.
- Able to automate tasks using a scripting language such as Python (preferred), Bash, Ruby or through configuration management like Puppet or Ansible.
- Ability to influence colleagues, clearly and concisely explain complex problems, and enjoy collaborating with peers and customers.
NICE TO HAVE BUT NOT NECESSARY
- Experience working with file storage technologies at a large scale (Isilon, NetApp, Qumulo, etc)
- Experience working with traditional block storage technologies (XtremeIO, Pure) and fiber channel (Cisco, Brocade)
PLUSES
- Experience with OpenStack Swift concepts and fundamentals
- Proficiency with popular orchestration and configuration management systems like Puppet, Ansible, and Terraform
- Kubernetes leveraging persistent volumes on wired storage
- Experience with services from public cloud providers like AWS, Azure, and GCP in hybrid storage environments—some data on-premises, some data in public cloud (S3, GCS, Glacier, etc.)
- BS in Computer Science or related IT field
- A passion for making Blizzard games the best in the world!
