Join our journey to create the best cross-platform application for messaging and real-time interactions! The Native Engineering at Discord oversees the technology and end to end user experience of our audio/video features across desktop and mobile.
The Native Engineering owns desktop application which is powered by Electron project. We are among the largest clients of Electron. Electron, being built on top of the ever-changing Chromium project, changes frequently and it takes significant effort for Discord to stay up-to-date.
Discord is looking for a highly technical, hands-on, and mission-driven individual to take ownership of this core area of our product to ensure Electron is still meeting Discord's needs as well as participate in the development of the Electron project itself.
You Will:
- Stay abreast of Electron development including critical issues (security or otherwise), upcoming releases, upcoming features, API deprecations, etc.
- Refactor and maintain our Electron CI process to reduce the burden of staying up-to-date.
- Evaluate new functionality exposed via Electron and it's applicability to Discord.
- Devise and implement a strategy to keep Discord up-to-date with Electron stable releases.
- Deploy and evaluate Discord built on beta releases of Electron and provide feedback to the core maintainers group.
- Participate in upstream Electron development and advocate for Discord features.
You Have:
- You have 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer.
- You’re comfortable with writing high performance code in C++ and JavaScript.
- Experience with Electron internals and/or building desktop application with it.
- You enjoy coming up with pragmatic solutions to concrete problems using first principles thinking.
- You are obsessed with user impacts and pursue craftsmanship with high quality of work
- You have strong communication skills and thrive in small, collaborative, energetic teams.
Bonus Points:
- Experience working with audio/video
- Experience working on / contributing to Chromium, Electron, NodeJS, or WebRTC
- Experience with Rust
- Experience with GN / Ninja
- Experience with the more esoteric corners of Win32
- Experience reverse engineering
- Experience with open source projects, especially Chromium or Mozilla.
