Senior / Lead Cloud Data Base Administrator (Cloud DBA)

About the role:

As a DBA here at Skillz, you will play a major role in defining the database strategy across the company. You’ll work hand-in-hand with the Head of Infrastructure to modernize our Database architecture. As we scale the business, you will work on identifying ways to maintain the security, stability, and performance of our databases while managing cost. You’ll also work directly with engineers to disseminate best practices and give direct guidance on schema design and query optimization.

What you'll do:

• Plan and execute migrating a legacy RDS Mysql database to Aurora MySQL
• Work with engineering to give guidance on schema design and query optimization.
• Minimal downtime database upgrades.
• Act as the subject matter expert for everything involved in our operational Mysql databases.
• Monitor and maintain database health across the cluster.
• Effectively articulate technical challenges and solutions.
• Sets the bar for operational excellence and drives improvements in customer SLAs and system KPIs.

Qualifications:

• BA/BS in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
• [Senior] 6+ years experience in administering databases serving large distributed systems
• [Lead] 9+ years of experience in database administration.
• 6+ years SQL experience
• General familiarity with the AWS RDS Mysql and ideally Aurora Mysql
• Extensive experience debugging and tuning performance on large databases servicing distributed systems
• Software development experience in one or more general purpose programming languages such as Golang or Python
• [Senior] Ability to execute against a provided project with minimal oversight.
• [Lead] Ability to work autonomously and to curate and execute against a project plan given minimal input.
• Knowledge of database security best practices
• [Senior] Experience optimizing query performance as well as application access patterns to promote system health.
• [Lead] Experience setting team’s data modeling strategy (schema, query, partition strategy…)

Bonus Points:

• Familiarity with the general AWS landscape (EC2, MSK, EKS, S3, Redis)
• Has experience building and optimizing data pipelines (Airflow, Kafka, Flink, CDC) and data warehouses (Snowflake, Redshift).
• Experience with other database systems like DynamoDB, Postgres, Elasticsearch
