Stoic is a multi-award winning independent video game studio seeking a Backend Engineer.
As a Senior Backend Engineer at Stoic, you will have the opportunity to work with the engineering team to develop the service backend for
Towerborne. You will be responsible for selecting technology as well as integrating with existing platforms. You will be able to take the state-of-the-art to the next level, for highly available and maintainable game services.
What you will do
- Gather requirements from design and production to help the team build out a roadmap and consistently deliver value sprint to sprint.
- Collaborate with a wide range of disciplines in a respectful and empathetic manner.
- Design, implement, test, and maintain robust backend services to power new game features.
- Create architectural designs for building backend infrastructure that is stable, scalable, and testable.
- Work closely with Unreal engineers to optimize call patterns and payload sizes to maintain performant game and backend when integrating new APIs.
- Build out internal web-based tooling for a variety of audiences to interact with backend systems and data.
- Take part in and help build out a runbook and knowledge base for on-call rotation to respond to issue escalations for our live game services.
Must have
- Developing and operating web microservices at scale
- Object-oriented languages (we use C#)
- At least one major cloud provider (we use Azure)
- Frontend web development technologies (JavaScript, HTML, CSS, etc)
- Modern JavaScript SPA frameworks (we use React)
- CI/CD systems (we use Azure DevOps)
- Security and encryption best practices
- Wide variety of database technologies (SQL, NoSQL)
Nice to have
- Server-authoritative online game architecture and best practices
- Cloud containerization (we use Kubernetes, Docker)
- Infrastructure as Code (we use Terraform)
- Third-party game platforms (PlayFab, Xbox, Commerce systems)
- Game engines (we use C++ and the Unreal game engine)
While Stoic is a fully remote, forever remote workforce, this is a US-based role. The person filling this role will need to be located in the contiguous United States.

United States Pay Range
$140,000 - $170,000 USD
This range is determined by several factors, including training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs, and market demands. It is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
The final job level and compensation will be determined by the candidate’s work experience, years of relevant experience, skills, qualifications, certifications, geographic location, and other business considerations.
