Principal Technical Artist, Assets & Materials - Unpublished Fighting Game

As a Technical Artist, you will focus on supporting artists with art asset prototypes so they can realize their work in-game. You will work with artists across all departments from modeling to lighting to ensure all assets work within the scope of the technical pipeline requirements. Working closely with each artistic department, you will standardize and improve development processes for the production of in-game assets, materials, shaders, and scalable development pipelines.
As a Principal Technical Artist: Assets & Materials on Project L, you’ll be responsible for technical environment assets for the highly iterative visual development phase. The role requires an understanding of general asset generation and implementation across all areas of game development within the Unreal engine. At times, you’ll be asked to stretch into other areas of content development including VFX and animation. You’ll use your mix of AAA and mobile games development expertise to develop an asset creation pipeline, generating efficiency and sustainability to help projects move from prototype into preproduction and production. You will report to the Art Director of Project L.
Responsibilities:
- Create mock-up art assets to test and learn from playable prototypes
- Be the tech-art catch-all with a broad skill set including character art, animation, rigging, environment art, and VFX
- Produce technical assets (such as shaders/materials)
- Provide technical support to artists and collect data to further improve the tools they use
- Identify and build foundational pipelines and tools
- Lead a long-term strategy to maintain and evolve the art workflows for your product
- Build close relationships with the artists and engineers to understand their needs and provide leadership on tool and pipeline development
- Understand content pipelines and upcoming content creation trends
- Consult on other R&D teams to define best practices
Required Qualifications:
- 8+ years of professional experience as a technical or environment artist in games or related industries
- Professional experience in mobile or AAA console game development
- Professional experience working in Unreal engine, creating environments and VFX
- Strong art skills and deep understanding of modeling, shaders, texturing, animation, and lighting for games
Desired Qualifications:
- Professional experience working in content creation and tool development in DCC tools, especially Maya, Photoshop, and Substance Designer/Painter
- Expertise in UI/UX design and front end development (i.e. PyQt/PySide)
- Proficiency in Python programming
