Under general direction from the Assistant Controller, the Manager, Payroll oversees payroll administration for our domestic and international operations. The Manager, Payroll is responsible for monitoring all tasks necessary to accomplish the organization’s payroll processing and payroll accounting objectives, including supervision of existing Payroll Accountant and management of relationships with Human Resources, Accounting, third-party accounting services providers, external auditors, and state and federal agencies. The employee’s time is divided between planning, coordinating and managing the functions of payroll, supervising the accounting for compensation-related journal entries and account reconciliations, and managing relationships to drive initiatives across the organization. This position requires an extremely detail orientated person with significant knowledge of payroll administration, including state and federal regulations. Knowledge of international regulations, particularly Canadian, is highly desired.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reviews semi-monthly domestic and Canadian payroll data prepared by the Payroll Accountant. Ensures accurate and timely payroll in compliance with all applicable wage and hour laws.
- Monitor regular tax filings with various jurisdictions and entities.
- Understand proper taxation of employer paid benefits.
- Manage the accurate and timely year-end reporting of W-2s and other wage and labor filings.
- Develop ad hoc financial and operational reporting as needed.
- Review compensation-related journal entries and account reconciliations prepared by the Payroll Accountant as part of monthly close.
- Manage employee communications regarding any payroll-related items or initiatives.
- Oversee payroll process for international locations.
- Develop and train staff.
- Push for process improvements within payroll both domestically and across the organization globally, obtaining buy-in from impacted parties through relationship-building and strong communication skills.
- Interface with benefits brokers to resolve issues with insurers, consider new service provider relationships, and bring items of concern to Controllership.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent years of experience.
- 5+ years of processing multi-state & international payroll experience.
- Deep knowledge of payroll best practices.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state regulations.
- Working knowledge of Workday, Oracle, and ADP.
- Strong PC skills including proficiency in Excel.
- Working knowledge of accounting impacts of payroll and related items.
- Strong work ethic and team player.
- High degree of professionalism and communication skills.
- Decision-making, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills.
NICE TO HAVE
- Certified Payroll Professional.
- Bachelor’s degree or minor in Accounting.
- Experience with stock option administration and accounting.
- Experience with the following international jurisdictions: Canada, Argentina, Colombia, Germany.
- Experience leading a team.
