Lead Software Engineer – Rules Engine

We implement game mechanics and game-flow features for Magic: the Gathering Arena, and we are seeking an experienced Lead Software Developer. In this role you will manage a team that collaborates frequently with game designers, front-end developers, and backend services to deliver a snappy and engaging digital experience with all the strategy of authentic Magic.
What you'll do:
- Directly lead and supervise a team of software developers
- Design workflows and tools that empower designers both on Arena and Magic R&D
- Architect contracts between the rules engine and the front-end client across multiple platforms
- Improve card data and localization systems so content delivery is as automated as possible
- Optimize core rules to improve performance and consistency
- Improve algorithms for predictive mana payment, turn passing, and targeting
- Empower the team to implement new game modes and formats
- Consult on and technically vetting feature requests for Arena
- Grow the scope of our natural language parser to understand new card text
- Craft tools to help your fellow developers, artists, designers, and pyromancers
- Assemble metrics and making performance improvements to our rules engine
- Investigate and fix live bugs to support our game
- Code reviews, brainstorm, and help our organization grow
What you’ll bring:
- 6+ years of total job experience wherein you have Shipped and supported at least one live service product
- Experience leading and mentoring effective teams.
- Strong communication and teamwork with diverse groups of people in various roles.
- Deep understanding of advanced design and development principles.
- Experience crafting sophisticated systems.
- Strong coding, debugging and problem-solving skills
- Ability to write readable, maintainable code.
- Proficient with multiple programming languages, including one with manually managed memory, such as C/C++
- Revel in resolving technical problems
- Want to build and maintain a positive team culture
- Love collaborating on feature implementation
- Is interested in parsers, compilers, and linguistics
- Enjoy digital card games and Magic: The Gathering
Education and Training:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or 5 years of experience in professional software development
