Lead Engineer, Backend System

Scopely is looking for a Lead Backend Systems Engineer to join our Marvel Strike Force team in the US on a remote basis. This is a hybrid role where you will leverage your experience with devops tools and concepts as well as your experience developing and supporting distributed services.

Marvel Strike Force is Scopely's squad-based Hero Collector RPG, housing heroes and villains across the Marvel Universe.

What You'll Do

• Oversee and contribute to a small team of engineers. You will help plan, organize, and direct the engineering work, ensuring on-time completion and quality outcomes
• Write and review code, develop documentation, and debug problems, live, on very complex systems responsible for delivering our games to millions of fans
• Assist development teams with your knowledge of best practices and proper design patterns to help build, scale, deploy, and operate new services and features
• Consistently aim to optimize for stability, supportability, and cost
• Together with the rest of the engineering team, you will share an on-call rotation and be an escalation contact for service incidents

What We’re Looking For

• Prior experience as a team lead
• 5+ years of experience in a Site Reliability, Devops, or Platform engineering role
• Proficient in one or more high-level language (Python, Ruby, JavaScript, and C# are all common on our projects but we are not picky)
• Must be comfortable working in a Linux/Unix environment
• Understanding of AWS’s core services, their use cases, best practices, and their coinciding implementation strategies
• Experience with Configuration Management and Infrastructure as Code with best practices
• We use Chef and Terraform respectively, but will help level up the right individual in these specific tools
• Experience implementing and maintaining CI/CD systems
• Experience with observability, application monitoring, and telemetry collection
• Excellent communication skills and a self-driven attitude towards continuous learning

Bonus Points

• Experience in maintaining and supporting infrastructure on a live service game
• Experience using MongoDB, Redis, or similar document stores

For candidates in CA, CO, NJ, NY and WA, the annual salary range is $ 168,000 -$ 253,000 plus equity, bonus and benefits including healthcare benefits, retirement benefits, pet insurance, paid holidays, paid Scopely free days, and unlimited paid time-off. Base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
