The Lead Concept Artist is responsible for leading & working with the concept team to generate a variety of industry leading imagery for environments, creatures, characters, props, vehicles, matte paintings, UI, marketing efforts, and beyond.

They’re the tip of the spear when it comes to project development, and will coordinate and collaborate with multiple discipline leads, artists, and directors; helping others realize and refine the project's vision via concept art and design.

CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lean on your imagination and vast knowledge of games, pop culture, and film to help pioneer designs reflecting the originality fans have come to expect from our projects
  • Fill in the creative & artistic blanks as necessary from the Art Director(s)
  • Collaborate with Directors, Team leads, Artists & Designers for definition of concept needs and expectations
  • Ensure concepts maintain quality, excitement, Gearbox’s’ own desires, and Project vision
  • Lead, motivate, and serve as a technical and creative resource for the concept team, assisting in the resolution of concept planning, issues, design, and function
  • Maintain art aesthetic consistency & creativity from beginning to end of a project
  • Detect significant problems and find the best “artistic/technical/organizational” compromise
  • Create a fun & inspirational environment while coaching artists by providing reviews, growth plans, and generally assisting in their skillsets
  • R&D new techniques, tools, and technology to best serve Project needs and keeping the concept team at Gearbox at the forefront of innovation and feeling fresh
  • Work closely with production to distribute tasks to the team, assist production with schedules and identify work that plays to the strengths and interests of individual artists
  • Take point on prospective hires, reviewing candidates and introducing them to the company via established onboarding procedures.
  • Provide regular feedback to concept artists verbally, via JIRA, through email, or other visual presentation (such as paint overs, additional concept art, reference, tweaked geometry, etc)

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 5+ years of industry experience, with at least one triple-A project under your belt
  • Exceptional foundation of art skills: demonstrate understanding of human / animal anatomy, industrial design, color theory, and general composition; though we don’t expect a master of all the above, you should have the confidence required at leading a stable of highly capable & talented artists
  • Able to clearly demonstrate in a portfolio the necessary skill required in achieving high caliber, inspirational content
  • Understand what it means to not only produce inspirational illustrations, but the various stages & breakouts necessary in bringing game designers, level designers, and other disciplines outside the craft onboard with how a design should ultimately be realized
  • A believer and consumer of what it means to build a new world and the components therein beyond simply “illustrating”, focusing on function, interaction, progression, evolution, and story telling
