Experienced Game Designer - Hybrid/Flexible

For 30 years we’ve been creating incredible video games at our multiple studios, but Rebellion is more than just games. We have our own film and mo-cap studio, we create board games, publish books, and through 2000AD, publish comics and graphic novels such as the amazing Judge Dredd.

We operate across multiple UK locations, with studios based in Oxford, Warwick, Liverpool, and Wakefield. We are on the lookout for Game Designers to join our passionate and talented team, working on an unannounced IP.

The Rebellion Design team designs, creates, and maintains games from concept to release. They work closely with the other specialist teams to implement fun and immersive gameplay utilising the game mechanics.

As a Designer you will work on a brand-new project from pre-production to completion, you’ll create designs and collaborate with other disciplines to create prototypes for gameplay features based on the creative vision of the project. You will contribute to the game’s vision by writing detailed specifications of gameplay features to be used throughout the production process and applying consistent gameplay languages across the game.

You will also get hands-on with the game setup. This includes implementing and maintaining large data sets, as well as producing in-game content using visual scripting.

In order to be successful, you will have an understanding of how to create game design documents and technical design briefs, knowledge of the video game development process & production pipelines and an ability to create solutions to problems that arise throughout. You will have worked on a game from start to finish and have an understanding of each stage of the design process.

Responsibilities

• Create detailed game design documents and prototype specifications which can be used throughout the production process
• Develop and iterate the game design through close collaboration with Programmers, Artists, and other disciplines
• Use in-house tools to implement features and gameplay
• Collaborate with other developers to define and tweak game mechanics
• Understand the iterating brief over the lifetime of the project, and apply style guides and consistent gameplay languages across the game
• Conduct gameplay evaluations with the team providing feedback and suggestions to help fine tune and improve the game, whilst balancing various areas such as controls, combat, metagame, etc.
• Track and update the progress of day to day tasks using the designated tracking tools
• Implement and incorporate feedback from the Producer and Leads into the work
• Fix the issues raised by testers

Requirements

• Professional experience as a Games Designer having published at least one pc/console game from conception to release
• Knowledge of creating game design documents and prototype specifications
• Knowledge of the video game development process, including working in a timely / time-bound manner, and prototyping/iterating appropriately within that restriction
• Knowledge of production pipelines
• Able to apply an awareness of the audience of the game
• Able to develop resolutions to problems
