About us:

We are an award winning digital product studio with over 250 people in 5 different studios across the globe (London, Malmö, New York, Lisbon and Tokyo).

For 16 years we have been helping our clients grow by creating innovative, engaging and beautiful digital products that evoke an emotional response. Humans are at the heart of everything we create and our processes and culture reflect this.

The projects we undertake vary from highly strategic discovery work to large-scale build projects and everything in between. Our clients include: The Body Coach, Google, Facebook, The Co-op, Three and many more. Check out our documentary about the incredibly transformative journey we’ve taken The Body Coach on.

The role:

ustwo is seeking a people-focused, empathetic Engineering Manager to help lead our European technology team. The team is split between Lisbon, London and Malmö, is currently 20+ strong and is growing fast! We also work across a wide range of technologies and platforms from native mobile developers using Kotlin and Swift, fullstack JavaScript web developers, even some Unity developers to name a few!

The Engineering Manager’s role is supporting our engineers, fostering a high-performing, happy and motivated team, and serving as a manager/mentor for the engineers. While this role does not operate at the project level making technical decisions or writing code, you will need to be capable of acting as a facilitator and support for technical decision-making on projects in support of the engineers you manage.

You will work closely with our European Tech Director and other technical leaders to expand ustwo’s European engineering team, and create the right mixture of skills and a positive, motivational team dynamic. Our European tech team is growing quickly, and you will be a driving force in hiring and building up a unique, talented, and diverse group of engineers.

Duties and responsibilities:

The most important part of the role will be to support our engineers - both the developers and the testers. You will be line managing engineers from a wide range of technical disciplines, with a range of skill levels and differing goals/objectives.

You will be involved as a key player for the entire employee lifecycle of engineers at ustwo, from the outset in our hiring process, through a new engineer’s onboarding, and as their line manager and mentor throughout their time at ustwo. You will help all of our engineers along their career development journey through active mentoring, goal setting, learning and development, and coaching.

Additionally, you will have responsibility for building a positive, collaborative team dynamic and helping to identify and own team initiatives.

You will be managing people in different locations and different cultures. Some travel to our other European locations to spend time with the team there will be required.

While you won’t be assigned to any projects directly, our work for clients is the core of our business and will be the primary focus of your direct reports. Working to understand the various project needs, supporting the success of your engineers in conjunction with the project’s technical leads and other discipline leads, and activating the learning opportunities on their projects are another aspect of the role. You will also actively participate in project planning and staffing decisions involving the engineering team.

Our work varies in size and shape from long-term strategy creation, through opportunity discovery, proposition discovery, product discovery, into alphas, betas, launching production builds, and iteration post launch. So there is a wide variety of project shapes and team sizes, with each project having unique technical needs and deliverables.

In conjunction with the project’s technical leads, you’ll be helping your direct reports to navigate and choose the best engineering practices for the project-at-hand. You will also be working with the wider leadership team to continue to further develop and ensure that our ways of working, delivery and cross-discipline collaboration are as optimal as can be.

Requirements:

We strongly believe in hiring for diversity, and we want to hire people who display strong potential. The key to your success and our success is hiring people who have a passion to constantly learn, share knowledge with others and display constant curiosity. We believe in the power of the introvert and extroverts and our Studio culture provides opportunities for colleagues of all persuasions to be heard, have ownership and clear opportunities to progress.

We have a very warm and welcoming culture. We are a very transparent company and work hard to distribute leadership across the studio. We are an equal opportunity employer and very much value diversity and inclusion. We believe diverse teams help us make better products and we actively hire for cultural growth. We seek people of all ages, genders, stories, cognitive capabilities and backgrounds.
