Engineering Manager - Simulation Runtime, Defence

The mission of the Engineering Manager is to develop, scale and encourage their engineering team in building the Defence business.
Our Simulation Runtime team are a multidisciplinary team of engineers using a variety of languages and frameworks to develop the platform and tooling required to build large-scale scientifically accurate synthetic environments that are used by government and defence organisations to plan and train more effectively.
The team's mission is to develop the world’s leading data analysis, modelling and simulation platform for enabling defence organisations to test decisions, plan and train in digital synthetic environments that accurately represent the largest and most complex multi-domain scenarios.
Your Opportunity:
- You will run an important part of our engineering group; the teams building the core of our synthetic environment platform offering
- You will understand the business drivers, functionality requirements, architecture, and technologies behind the products and systems you own and provide context and visibility into the reasoning behind decisions whilst empowering your engineers to independently execute
- You will be responsible for decomposing complex problems into pragmatic straight-forward solutions with your team and planning the time and resources needed for successful project delivery
- You will consistently bring strong, data-driven business and technical judgment to decisions, balancing the short term, long term and experimental risk
- You will grow a team of successful engineers through collaborative development planning, coaching, and empowerment through strategic goals
- You will proactively develop and promote top performers and will play a key role in performance and promo reviews
- You will collaborate with other EMs, Product Managers and Senior Engineers to determine the strategic direction and long-term viability of your software architecture, both from a business and technology standpoint
- You will help to shape the team’s software development practices as well as contributing to the software design process

- You have a proven track record of building high functioning teams, recognising that you are an enabler for others to be successful
- You come from a deep engineering background, with many years of hands-on coding to understand the potentials and challenges of the tasks ahead. (This is not a hands-on coding role, but this experience will give you the insight to steer good decision-making)
- You are comfortable making estimates, refining them, and providing good communication about the challenges and successes of your team as it proceeds
- You have an understanding of network communication and how various architectures approach the complexities therein
- You have an understanding of the underlying hardware and how to develop software that takes full advantage of the hardware

Based in London, UK head office (with a hybrid approach of 1 to 2 days a week in the office). Our office in Liverpool Street backs onto Old Spitalfields Market, blending us nicely between the cultures of the City and Shoreditch.
