Encounter Designer, Secret Door

At Secret Door we believe that some of our best memories come from shared experiences with friends. We are in the early days of our studio and there’s a ton of opportunity to have a big impact on what we are making. Most importantly, we know our games will be at their best when a variety of voices, identities, and perspectives go into their creation, so come join us!

As we begin crafting how to bring people together in positive ways, we are looking for a talented and passionate level designer to help us make amazing encounters and missions for our game. Level design is more than just laying out a series of challenges, but is about understanding what is fun and what types of things groups of players will really respond to positively. In this role you will be defining a lot of the soul of our game as level design is really where the rubber hits the road and the ideals of a game become real. As only the third designer on our team, you will have a great deal of input not only on the levels being generated but on the game as a whole.

What we need:

  • Experience designing turn based levels for digital or board games that will engage players and highlight encounter environments
  • Knowledge around what makes turn based combat and exploration interesting and compelling
  • Self motivated person who can design a level from top to bottom and push it forward on their own
  • Ability to quickly iterate through multiple passes of a design based on player feedback
  • Implementation and integration experience with a modern game development package (extra points for Unity experience)
  • Ability to operate in a fluid startup environment where requirements and situations can often shift
  • Deep experience with tactical board games and RPGs (both digital and physical) is a plus

What you’ll do:

  • Generate turn based grid oriented levels that are fun to play through
  • Layout a variety of encounters and missions using level editing tools
  • Iterate and improve on those levels based on player feedback
  • Design and create enemies and enemy abilities for those levels
  • Populate encounters and missions with content and rewards
  • Have a good time working with a small passionate group of developers

Application Materials:

  • In addition to a cover letter, a portfolio with examples and detailed breakdowns of your level design work (personal and/or professional) will be reviewed and help you stand out as a candidate.

If these things resonate with you and you find yourself curious about what we are doing at Secret Door, please reach out!
