The Summer Internship

At Discord, we offer a personalized experience for interns, and our aim is to offer an experience that mimics what it is like to actually work here. We match qualified interns with projects and groups, based on interests and skill sets and fully embed interns within those groups for the summer. Internships are paid and are a minimum of 12 weeks, targeting a start date in June to accommodate varying school calendars. Conditions permitting, our 2023 summer internships will be remote, with an opportunity to spend a week in the office at some point during the program.

The Team

Join our journey to create the best cross-platform application for messaging and real-time interactions! The Native Engineering at Discord oversees the technology and end to end user experience of our audio/video features across desktop and mobile. The team’s mission is to give our users the utmost certainty that our voice, video, and client experience is excellent.

The Native Framework & Tools (a subteam under the Native Engineering organization) team’s mission is 1) to improve developer’s productivity and quality of life, by optimizing native developer ecosystem and 2) to optimize native stack’s performance, by building powerful observability and analysis tools.

This is a very dynamic team with lots of learning opportunities. The team consists of several senior engineers with strong technical backgrounds who are happy to share their knowledge and to mentor.

Our work ranges from platform systems, automation, client infrastructure, to cloud services, UI applications, operations analytics. Some of the awesome projects we have built are real-time audio/video telemetry system, state of the art application updater, and framework upgrade automation.

What you'll be doing

• Working in a large scale codebase, shipping code to production, experiencing the full software engineering lifecycle.
• These are potential projects that may change depending on your skillset, career goals and the needs at the time of your internship.
  
  • Network trace capture and replay through network emulation.
  • Extensive test automation for all Discord clients, including automated network impairment tests.
  • Distributed build system with remote caching.
  • Mobile client crash and analytics system.
  • Progressive deployment automation.
  • Windows / Mac OS application installer / updater with auto repair.

You’ll Thrive In This Role If (Role Requirements)...

• Currently enrolled in a Bachelors (rising Junior or Senior) course of study
• You are proficient with at least one of these programming languages: Rust, Javascript/Typescript, Python, C/C++.
• You have experience in at least one of these areas: build systems, networking, automation, application development.
• You want to learn about toolchains, software build process, CI/CD framework, building test systems, building large scale real-time telemetry systems, and building automation.
• You are passionate and care about the product.
• You are eager to learn, not afraid to come up with pragmatic solutions to concrete problems using first principles thinking.
• You have strong communication skills and enjoy being in a small, collaborative, selfless and fast moving team.

Salary of $67/hour*
