Associate Designer

The Gearbox Entertainment Company is an award-winning creator and distributor of entertainment for people around the world. An Associate Designer at The Gearbox Entertainment Company is an entry-level development role within Gearbox Software for recent college graduates looking to get a start in the industry. As part of our 2022 class, Associates will onboard with one of our design teams and immediately jump into working on AAA games. The first few months will be spent learning our tools and processes, as well as being exposed to the variety of job roles our Designers take on projects. Some Associates might join a Level Design team working on one of our next big projects. Other Associates might gravitate towards Enemy or Gear design. We even have a few slots available to help support our catalog of already released games doing patching and balancing work as part of the 'Live' team. We know every candidate will have different skills they have picked up from college or previous work, and we strive to make sure people end up with the best career fit possible.

We want to see what makes you an awesome designer of games, so our application process requires a portfolio website of your work. The best portfolios are the ones that include videos, screenshots, or embedded demos, and additional documentation about your workflow, process, and specific contribution to any team projects is always helpful. Due to the volume of applications and security risks, we will not download projects files or installers, so make sure you have an actual portfolio website up and not just a link to your GitHub or Dropbox. We are primarily a Unreal based development studio, so we prefer to see work demonstrating proficiency in Unreal Engine 4 or 5. We make 3D action games, and primarily first person shooters, so we highly recommend your portfolio contains relevant work to those types of games. Beyond that, we just want to see you shine! Show us your best and come join our growing team at Gearbox.

Associate Design positions are full time and located in Frisco, TX as either full-time on-site or hybrid (2-3 days in the office each week). We are willing to consider some very exceptional fully remote applicants, but we prefer people new to the industry spend time at the office getting to know us and our creative culture. The first year of employment is centered around learning the craft of professional game design and slowly working from small tasks up to larger design responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Learn Gearbox's tools and creative processes
  • Increase your Unreal proficiency over time from "student" level to "semi-grizzled veteran" status
  • Be a sponge, and listen and learn from departmental leads, mentors, and members of other departments
  • Assist with small design tasks on AAA projects, building on that work to bigger pieces of content
  • Help fix bugs, iterate, and polish content based on feedback
  • Assist other designers with their task loads as needed

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a college degree program related to game design, level design, UX design, or a related field
  • A portfolio website displaying at minimum 1 or 2 examples of game design work, including videos or walkthroughs about your process.
  • Familiarity and understanding of Gearbox Software titles

We are committed to reflecting the diversity of the world we strive to entertain. As an Equal Opportunity Employer, we provide fair and equal treatment to all team members and applicants. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability, genetic information, pregnancy or maternity, veteran status, or any other status protected by applicable national, federal, state or local law.
