2024 Software Engineering Intern

Niantic’s Augmented Reality (AR) Mapping Team is seeking interns to work on advancing our real-world AR games and our developer platform. Join us for a 3 month internship and grow your skills quickly while being mentored by an experienced team of engineers and researchers.

Our technical challenges include data consistency across distributed systems, creating compelling gameplay for a global user base working with geo data at scale, and innovating in augmented reality. Niantic Engineering leads the advancement of augmented reality and other immersive technologies while creating engaging apps for a user base in the billions. The projects you will work on fit under the broad umbrella of augmented reality, including machine learning, mapping & relocalization, tracking, and 3D reconstruction. We invite you to explore the best AR problems with us!

Responsibilities

• Work alongside our engineers and researchers to build and solve problems collaboratively.
• Participate in the design, development and implementation of software solutions.
• Develop well-tuned code that may be included as part of our next software release.
• Work closely with new and emerging technologies in the real-world AR gaming space.
• Required in-office 2 days on Tuesday and Thursday.

Qualifications

• Graduating in 2024, 2025, or 2026 with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
• Previous internship experience as a software engineer in Python or C++
• You are highly curious and don’t shy away from picking up new technologies and learning about new technologies.
• Proven understanding of computer science fundamentals with excellent coding, problem solving, and debugging skills.

Plus If…

• You have used cloud computing platforms such as GCP or AWS before.
• You have made data structures or other design choices to optimize pipeline speed.
• You know computer vision or machine learning and wrangled with 2D and/or 3D data.
• You have experience in graphics APIs such as OpenGL, Metal, and Vulkan.
• You have experience with game engines like Unity or Unreal.
• You have experience in developing mobile AR experiences.

The pay range for this internship is GBP 5,500 to GBP 7,000 per month.
