Are you an exceptional writer who enjoys the process of honing your skills, embraces opportunities to learn, and wants to work in a team whose ultimate goal is to master their craft and build the best RPG of all time? If so, then we’d like to hear from you.
Larian Studios is on a quest to recruit new writers for our team based in Guildford. We have 25 years of experience creating critically acclaimed role playing games and pride ourselves on our excellent storytelling — our most recent title, Divinity: Original Sin 2, has won over 160 awards (including the BAFTA for Best Multiplayer Game) and our next game, Baldur’s Gate 3, is currently in Early Access.
As a Junior Writer you would be reporting to the Associate Writing Lead and/or Senior Writers on the team.
What we will expect you to do:
- Write dialogues and test them in-game
- Ensure technical accuracy of dialogue elements
- Implement feedback from dialogue reviews
- Track dialogues through the pipeline, communicate with other teams to find solutions for dialogue issues and content needs, and make sure documentation is up to date
- Troubleshoot and bugfix dialogues throughout their lifespan
- Share ownership of dialogue to ensure dialogues have sufficient reactivity to in-game systemics
- Write texts for in-game non-dialogue elements, including tooltips, item descriptions, journal entries, UI elements, and other ancillary texts
- Liaise with other teams to answer questions regarding dialogue and story elements
We are looking for someone who:
- Is first and foremost an exceptional writer who can consistently demonstrate their skill through both their experience and skills tests and is precise about language to the point that they will not settle for anything less than excellence
- Is passionate about storytelling in games, puts the player before themself and understands the importance of player agency and meaningful choices in not only bringing a story to life but also driving narrative forward
- Seeks feedback proactively and continuously with the ultimate goal to self-correct and deliver polished, publishable work
- Thinks critically about their own work and prioritises strong storytelling over a beloved turn of phrase Writes interesting and convincing characters, and seeks out the unexpected angle on their stories
- Has something to say and sees a brief as a starting point for unexpected delights and not just a task to be completed
- Learns quickly, but knows to expect results only through iteration and continuous practice
- Communicates clearly not only in dialogue but also when writing descriptions that Cinematic Artists and Animators need to bring these moments to life
- Is highly digitally literate and adapts quickly to new software and tools (G Suite, Confluence, Jira etc.) Is very attentive to detail and undaunted by complexity and change
- Fluent in English
Ideally you:
- Read voraciously and critically across a wide range of genres and themes
- Have experience with games (as a player and/or maker), especially RPGs and Dungeons & Dragons
- Have studied an essay-based degree (e.g. English, History, Linguistics, Philosophy etc.)
- Are familiar with Larian’s games and are able to emulate the writing style
