VP of Engineering

Mojiworks is a best-places-to-work-award winning games startup. We use cutting-edge web technology to create native-quality games that connect friends in the online platforms they hang out most: places like Snapchat, where our first game Ready Chef Go has over 75 million players since launch. We call them hypersocial games - playable instantly and shared together for years, to strengthen relationships and grow new ones.
We’re a distributed company, with Mojiworkers from Brazil to Hong Kong, and a HQ space in the historic games industry hub of Guildford, UK that we use for team onsites. We take pride in our core value of sustainably high performance of a highly creative, diverse, & inclusive team, which has led to us winning 3 times in GameIndustry.biz's Best Places To Work awards including the special Diversity award in 2018 for driving D&I in the industry.
The Role
We’re looking for a software engineering manager, with experience of full-stack development and a desire to help create the best team possible, to lead our shared technology efforts and engineering partnerships. This is a senior role where you’ll report to, and work closely with, our CEO to maintain and improve our positive culture and product-focused engineering work. You’ll have the chance to help create games that are played by millions of people around the world, but we don’t need you to have games industry experience - we care deeply about our diverse and inclusive culture, and want you to bring experience that our current team doesn’t have.
Responsibilities
- Coordination of our technology needs, across our game and other teams, identifying opportunities for sharing and development that benefits Mojiworks as whole
- Management of the development aspects of our highly important strategic partnerships, including Snap, to collaborate within the product group to make features that lead to us having the best possible hypersocial games.
- Leading development of shared tech and tools, including hands-on full-stack engineering - although we expect this to be a minority of your time
- Direct management of our engineers, including hiring and learning & development
Requirements
- You’re high empathy, a great collaborator, and have a positive and constructive approach to achieving ambitious goals with a talented team
- You enjoy managing software engineers & taking development leadership on agile projects
- You have experience of full-stack development of live projects with large user numbers
- You care deeply about team culture, and can thoughtfully decide on changes aimed at making the best work environment possible
- You have significant expertise with client and/or backend web technologies including JavaScript/TypeScript, and cloud services such as GCP or AWS
- You’re happy to work in a fully distributed and flexible culture, with core hours of 12pm to 1pm UK time
Renumeration will be competitive based on your experience, and also includes significant share options.
Benefits
- Distributed & flexible working culture 🌍
- Share options 📈
- Annual self development budget 🌱
- Working environment budget 🧑💻
- Mental health support 💙
- Healthclub subsidy 🧘
- Inclusive sick pay policy 🤕
- At least 25 days annual paid-time-off 🏖️
We're committed to building a team as diverse as our players, and eagerly welcome differences in background, life experience, and culture. With us, you'll help to break down barriers within the gaming and tech industries. You'll help us create an impactful and ethical company, and grow right along with us. If this speaks to you, we encourage you to apply.
