Job Description

Purpose of the position:
The Visual Effects Artist designs and implements, under supervision, video game special effects in accordance with a project’s artistic direction and production deadlines. He/she has strong artistic skills, and an understanding of the technical constraints on the target platforms.

Visual Art:
• Using a variety of particle systems, create all aspects of special effects artwork:
o Particle system templates and animation
o Particle textures
o Particle models (as necessary)
o Lighting
• Good knowledge of in-game special effects, including:
o Smoke
o Explosions
o Fire
o Weather
o Atmospherics
o Water
o Light/Energy
o Damage
o Full screen filters
o Post processing
Individual:
• Coming with creative ideas and solutions to the tasks that have been assigned and communicate them to the Leads;
• Work with your lead to create a plan and schedule.
• Proactively communicate task status to your peers, customers, and Leads.
• Regularly follow-up on the status of dependencies that are holding up the task.
• Correct defects discovered by QC or your customers in a timely fashion.
• Provide self-assessment on how to improve your own performance.
• Work within the technical limitations of a variety of game engines.
• Match the required art style of a project.

Teamwork:
• Cooperate with fellow Artists, Animators, Riggers, Game Designers, Programmers, and Sound Designers to complete tasks according to the production plan approved by management
• Work closely with direction of Creative Leadership to create high quality visual effects
• Collaborate with Gameplay Programmers to ensure necessary VFX hooks are exposed for gameplay related effects.
• Collaborate with Graphics Programmers to ensure necessary technology/features are present in order to reach the visual benchmarks.
• Create and maintain workflow documentation for your team's content.
• Share artistic knowledge with Artists, support them when needed.

Qualifications

Training:
• Graduated with a 4-year Bachelor’s degree.
• College diploma in game-oriented visual effects, or equivalent training

Relevant Experience:
• Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience in modeling, texture, lighting and image processing or other relevant experience.
• Must be proficient in Photoshop, After Effects, or equivalent tools.
• Good knowledge of 3DS Max particles/dynamics systems, and special effects creation.
• Good knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint).

Other Skills:
• Good understanding of art fundamentals: color theory, lighting, shape, composition, etc.
• Must be creative and be able to adapt to a variety of art styles;
• Commitment to personal and peer development and sharing best practices;
• Must be responsible, proactive, accountable, and personable.
• Good organizational and analytical skills, and able to solve problems.
• Passion for creating and playing games, regardless of platform or genre.
• Able to take constructive criticism and keep up with changes.
• Able to work under pressure.
• Team player.
• Good communication skills. English ability a plus.
• Scripting skills (MaxScript, Python, HLSL) a plus.
