Gearbox Software is seeking an experienced level designer who specializes in Unity to join us in developing a Unity based action game. We are largely an Unreal focused studio, but we are excited to grow our small internal Unity team. This role involves working in a small team environment to design, implement, and balance new weapons, enemies, and abilities for the game. This role will work closely with all individuals on the project to iterate and improve the game experience for players. Additional responsibilities may include additional systems design work and other design needs that might arise. This role will require constant online playtesting and working with studio leadership and partners to improve the game over time.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop new levels and combat areas, following the project style guide and creative direction. This will involve pitching new ideas and taking those ideas all the way through the production pipeline to a shippable result.
  • Maintain good communication with other departments and stakeholders, and teach others best practices when working inside Unity, suggesting improvements to our pipeline as we grow.
  • Push the boundaries of what the game currently achieves in level design. This involves working closely with coders, artists, and other designers to make sure new features meet technical and creative goals and ship on time.
  • Work closely with internal focus testing, community management, and other sources of player feedback to maintain and expand the online community surrounding the game

Qualifications:

  • A Level Design portfolio demonstrating their work, preferably with videos and supporting documentation regarding their workflow and thought processes
  • Deep knowledge of Unity based Level Design and the Unity development pipeline
  • Familiarity with Maya and Max to work with artists on the project to co-develop levels more efficiently.
  • Core understanding of solid level design foundations and developing levels for the modern 3D Action game market
  • Have shipped 1 or more AAA action titles in a game or level design role, with a preference towards level designers using Unity technology.
  • Excellent documentation, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Ability to explain a design effectively to multiple stakeholders and maintain communication during its development.
  • Ability to maintain focus and self-motivation towards the current project goals.

Bonus Points For:

  • 3 or more years of level design experience, including at least 1 console title
  • Shipped games using Unreal 4 technology
  • Live near or be able to relocate to Frisco, Texas
  • Unreal Level Design experience
  • Experience with monetization strategies and incorporating them into game designs.
  • Experience working in small, rapid development environments
  • Prior leadership experience
