Apply

Harebrained Schemes seeks a versatile UI/UX Designer to design, create, and iterate complex sets of menus and interactions for our projects. The ideal candidate is already familiar with PC/console turn-based strategy titles and their UI considerations (BATTLETECH, XCOM, Stellaris) and is excited about the prospect of creating clean, concise, and polished UI for similar experiences. You’ll collaborate with the Game Director and HBS team to establish and then advocate for the high-level design direction of the game.

If you are a thoughtful collaborator, with a deep understanding of—and appreciation for—player experiences across a variety of game genres and audiences, we’d love to talk with you.

This is an on-site, full-time individual contributor role.

(Please note that we are currently working from home due to Covid-19. We will return to the office in stages when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, all interviews will be done virtually.)

What You’ll Do

  • Collaborate with the Game Director, Design Lead, and Engineers to concept and implement great UI for all aspects of a project - from wireframe to final art assets.
  • Work to establish a strong graphic design language for a project's UI, with consideration for both static and motion design.
  • See that UI visual style through from project inception to completion, ensuring that the UI experience remains cohesive, while also continuing to iterate on the visual style based on feedback, gameplay, and UX considerations when needed.
  • Author shipping-quality UI art assets, and manage additional work (icons, etc.) from external UI Artists when required.
  • Work directly within Unity (or another UI-creation pipeline) to create clean screen layouts for Engineering implementation.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Design and UX to iterate and improve the overall UI experience based on feedback and testing - throughout the product's development and continuing into post-launch.

What You’ll Bring

  • You’ve worked on a variety of projects - big or small, indie or 1st party, PC or console or mobile, licensed or new IP, etc. - to understand the breadth of issues you have to anticipate and know that every project is different
  • The graphic design eye and software skills (Photoshop, etc) to create polished, aesthetically exciting UI that complements and adds to the project's established art direction.
  • An end-to-end production mindset - your job is done when the game experience is working and polished, not when your mockup has been handed off.
  • Extreme attention to detail - a passion for all the polish and special-case details that can take a user experience from acceptable to great.
  • An iterative mindset. Prototype early, iterate often, finalize and polish later.
  • You love working with others - we’re a highly-collaborative bunch.

Nice to Haves

  • Interest in UI implementation as well as asset creation. For example: prior experience implementing UI in Unity UI, Flash, or HTML/CSS.
  • A deep understanding of UX design concepts as applied to games.
  • You've played (and enjoyed) past Harebrained Schemes and Paradox Interactive titles.
  • Experience using DoTween or equivalent for animation and transitions.

Employment Eligibility Requirement

Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident and not require Visa sponsorship to be eligible.
