On being a Tools Programmer at Ubisoft Toronto’s Performance Capture Studio:

The Ubisoft Toronto Performance Capture Studio delivers the ultimate in immersive entertainment experiences. Our team of experts brings stories to life and so far has captured content for the global Ubisoft portfolio of world-renowned brands, including Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, For Honor, and Watch Dogs.

The performance capture volume is outfitted with 80 Vicon T160 cameras, which work in tandem with world-class motion capture and helmet-based animation capture systems. This set-up allows for the capture of subtle performances with extreme accuracy — used for everything from solo performances to multi-character scenes. The studio is also a fully equipped sound stage, able to record high-quality audio simultaneously with motion capture.

When you’re a Tools Programmer on the Performance Capture Studio, you play a fundamental role in the design and implementation of the technologies used by the performance capture department. You know you have done a good job when our game production and cinematics teams can channel their vision and creativity into a world-renowned game effortlessly.

As a dependable member of a dedicated, multi-studio team of tools developers, your role is to equip your users with the solutions they need to transform an idea into a fun and creative world. You enjoy working iteratively and consider user feedback invaluable. Through this collaborative loop, you guarantee that the systems you deliver are efficient and intuitive.

Type of Position: Permanent, full-time.

What you’ll do:

You work closely with the performance capture team (motion capture, animation, talent, audio, game production) which gives you a deep understanding of the real needs behind their requests. Your problem-solving skills and your ingenuity allow you to find the most appropriate solutions. You frequently make suggestions to improve systems and you maintain clear documentation.

You routinely collaborate with your fellow programmers to analyze requirements, develop new features and resolve bugs that arise. You both share your innovations with and learn from your peers in the development community at the studio.
