Blizzard Entertainment has an opening for a talented and enthusiastic lead software engineer to join the Battle.net & Online Products team!
Battle.net & Online Products is home to a team of caring and passionate engineers, product managers, designers, and test analysts, that work together on the legendary gaming network, Battle.net, to bring millions of gamers together and to make our products available to our players around the world.
The opening is on a team that develops and maintains some very interesting services, all with the goal of making our fans happy with great offerings and new ways to play our games and engage with our products. This includes our Viewership Incentives integrations with Twitch and YouTube, our secure keys systems which allow gifts and giveaways and in-store purchases, our IGR (Internet Game Room) sites and services, which is particularly huge in Korea, allowing players to access extra features and contents in our games, and various other features for a players out-of-game inventory, promotions, and value-granting partnership. All of these services allow all sorts of giveaways, and partnerships, to bring more goodies into the hands of our players.
We primarily use Java and Tomcat, with a microservices architectural approach, and SQL and NoSQL data stores, to deliver these helpful services. We are currently in the process of migrating from on-prem data centers to public cloud, so we are using some of the latest engineering techniques and architectural approaches. We currently have a wonderful team of friendly, supportive, and talented engineers, and are looking for a caring and dedicated Tech Lead to support us through the next chapter of our growth and evolution.
The lead software engineer will guide a team of about 8-10 talented engineers, to develop scalable and high quality services. The role focuses on server-side engineering and architecture, while interfacing with multiple consumers to deliver a convenient and delightful user experience.
Responsibilities
- Guide the technology for various player benefiting value-add services, which includes mostly backend service tiers, but also some web tiers
- Partner closely with a Lead Product Manager, to support this team to successful and impactful launches and an excellent team environment
- Create a roadmap for tech excellence and help prioritize these improvements are part of the larger team roadmap
- Manage and coach a team of 8-10 talented software engineers - grow and maintain a happy, collaborative, and successful team
- Provide guidance to achieve high quality and secure code and architecture
- Help ensure the team development process runs smoothly and iterate and change it as needed
- Guide the team towards doing the right projects, based on scope, complexity, and effort, as compared to estimated value
- Contributed to the excellence of the larger group, with input on operations, technologies, and architecture, across the broader team
Requirements
- Technical Experience
- A minimum of 12 years’ professional software engineering experience, including experience with Java
- Strong architectural knowledge of distributed, fault tolerant, and scalable systems and services
- Solid software security fundamentals
- An grasp of high quality, safe, and easy to use APIs
- Previous experience with web technologies
- Comfortable with public cloud concepts and technologies
- Proficient with data storage technologies, including solid experience with RDBMSs and NoSQL solutions.
- Familiar with various forms of testing practices, including regression, acceptance, functional, and load testing
- Management and Coaching Experience

- Excellent communication skills and strong leadership experience
- Ability to build effective vertical and horizontal relationships, to foster world-class collaboration and teamwork
