The Undead Labs design team is looking for a Technical Designer with experience working on sandbox games and RPGs. Your passion for delivering improvements to existing tools and workflows will allow you to act as a bridge between design and engineering. With a high level of technical skill and the ability to code, you will be our force multiplier, unlocking the creative abilities of the design team, and helping us build the future of the State of Decay franchise.

As a technical designer, you will help streamline scripting design and make improvement suggestions to engineering, ensuring gameplay features are not compromised by the limitations of technical processes . You will set the standard for excellent workflow efficiency, provide feedback to designers on their scripting work, and help debug issues that come up, in addition to designing and implementing technical aspects of gameplay features for State of Decay 3.

Core Responsibilities and Objectives

  • Work as part of a cross-functional team to support the design and implementation of new systems and content
  • Be the last-mile implementer of designs through scripting, tuning, and configuring code and content
  • Take part in advanced data debugging, providing assistance to all designers
  • Provide feedback to designers and programmers, including suggestions to improve tools and methods, bugs, scripting reviews, etc.
  • Test new features and tools before they are deployed to the rest of the team
  • Write elegant, and maintainable implementations within designer tools, C++ code and blueprints
  • Be an advocate for good usability of design tools
  • Contribute to designs that are complex, abstract, or technically challenging
  • Design and implement traditional systems and content when needed

Core Traits and Experience

  • Curiosity and drive to understand how things work
  • Empathetic towards the needs of users of design tools and processes
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively
  • Ability to clearly express ideas, both spoken and written
  • Ability to understand and communicate in a technical language
  • Experience with Unreal engine and/or other platforms
  • Programming/scripting in C++
  • Comfortable having your code reviewed by a programmer
  • Ideally brings 4 years or more experience in a game design or engineering role

Physical Requirements

  • Close vision to monitors and screens, consistently working on computer equipment such as keyboards and monitors, long periods of sitting.
  • Noise levels are low to moderate in the work environment.
