Technical Designer
The Technical Designer is a game or level designer by training and is known for their technical skills. As part of a production design or multidisciplinary team, the designer will create and implement complex technical and/or system design elements into the game.
Acting as a technical reference for team members, you will assist, support and advise colleagues whenever necessary. The Technical designer may also be called upon as one of the project’s technical experts on a specific game element.
Responsibilities:
The main and routine tasks of the Technical Designer are to:
- Autonomously oversee the production and implementation of the technical elements of a complete game feature by working in close collaboration with TDs, programmers and collaborators in other work units
- Act as a technical expert on the topic and ensure the tools, documents, technical support and determination and dissemination of best practices (with the approval of the design TD)
- Contribute to data optimization and validation by ensuring that colleagues comply with the technical standards that apply in the area of expertise, in keeping with budget constraints
- Take part in advanced data debugging until production has ended
- Periodically provide feedback to design TDs, including suggestions to improve tools and methods, bugs, etc.
- As an expert user, help test new features and tools before they are deployed to the rest of the team
- Carry out production tasks as a game or level designer and prototype the gameplay features during game design
- Design and implement elements that are more complex, more abstract or more technically challenging and which impact the entire game
- Carry out all other related tasks
Training
- College diploma in level design or relevant training or experience
- Programming training an asset
Experience
- Minimum 5-10+ years in technical design, scripting or level design
- Must have shipped a minimum of 2 AAA titles
Other Skills
- Game or level design (profile: more technical than creative)
- Curiosity and drive to understand how things work
- Solid analytical and problem-solving skills
- Adaptability, autonomy, proactivity
- Structure, attention to detail, efficiency
- Ability to clearly express ideas (spoken and written)
- Ability to understand and communicate in technical language

- Experience with engines and/or platforms at an asset
- Experience with 2D/3D software an asset
- Programming/scripting experience an asset
