Technical Designer - Procedural Level Design
2 years ago
Job Description
The Molasses Flood is looking for a Technical Designer to own our procedural environment efforts. Reporting to the level design lead, you will use our state-of-the-art terrain system to write scripts that generate a broad range of gameplay environments. You will help drive new features for the system, and work with programmers to implement those features. You will work with level designers to ensure consistency between hand-crafted and procedural spaces, and with level artists to make those procedural spaces both beautiful and performant. Most importantly, you will leverage both your technical skills and your strong level and space design sensibilities to ensure that our procedural spaces are fun, beautiful and support the gameplay and the story.
You will also help more broadly with our environment creation efforts by creating and documenting gameplay systems, asset pipelines and processes to assist and guide the environment team to game completion.
This is a full-time salaried position with a hybrid WFH model based out of our office in the greater Boston area. Relocation assistance is available.
Responsibilities
- Write and maintain the level scripts from which all the procedural spaces in the game are generated
- Work with level designers to incorporate their feedback on procedural spaces, and to ensure consistency between those procedural spaces and hand-crafted ones
- Work with environment artists to develop and maintain the tools they use to get their content into procedural spaces.
- Work with programmers to spec out and implement new features for the terrain system
- Support the entire environment team, both design and art, by developing tools, asset pipelines and processes, and clearly documenting and maintaining them
Qualifications
- Demonstrated interest and understanding of level design principles
- A strong technical background in scripting, visual or otherwise
- The ability to communicate fluently with engineering, art and production
- Candidates must have a US work permit or citizenship
- Curiosity, kindness, and a positive and professional can-do attitude
Nice to Haves
- Experience as a level designer in a shipping game
- Experience with procedural systems (for environments or otherwise)
- Previous experience as a Technical Designer in the game industry
- Strong UE4 or UE5 experience
- Ability to read and understand C++
