Who is SkyBox Labs?
SkyBox Labs is a game development studio that works on some of the world’s most iconic games. Our projects include working as a co-developer on Halo Infinite, projects in the Minecraft Universe, supporting the development of Magic: The Gathering Arena, supporting development of Fallout 76, and developing unannounced titles including partner projects and internal IP. As one of Vancouver’s fastest-growing game studios, since our inception in 2011, SkyBox Labs has evolved from a group of 8 people developing independent projects to a team of over 200+ engineers, artists, designers, producers, and more.
SkyBox Labs is looking for an experienced, versatile, and passionate Technical Artist to create and optimize our artist tools and pipelines for work on our original IP . We are looking for a creative problem solver who will act as the key link between our engineering and content teams on this exciting new project!
Responsibilities
- Provide, maintain and take ownership of the character control rigs (biped and multiped skeletons in Maya) to support the needs of the animation team.
- Implement new animation content from animators into the game using animation blueprint and supporting animation assets (montages, blend spaces, notifies, curves, etc.)
- Incorporate Unreal 5's new animation control rigs into the existing animation pipeline, including MetaHuman Facial and Body control rigs.
- Research viable methods for facial and body capture that can be incorporated into our existing animation pipeline.
- Implement advanced character features made available in Unreal 5 (groom hair, cloth rigs).
- Provide game feature support through custom blueprint components. Assist in the organization and optimization of in-engine art assets (characters, animations, environments, materials, VFX, UI art).Seamlessly incorporate purchased character assets into our existing art and animation pipeline (skeletal mesh rigging, animation retargeting, materials, etc.)
- Acts as a communication bridge between animators and gameplay engineers.
Qualifications
- At least 3-5+ years of experience as a Character or Environment Technical Artist
- Strong ability using Maya, Python, Blueprints, other automated scripts and custom tools to support the animation team.
- Works autonomously under the guidance of the Technical Art Director
- Thrives in a team environment where creative ideas are encouraged and freely shared.
- Working Knowledge and familiarity with Unreal Engines
Nice to Haves:
- Technical Art experience within the games industry
- Environment kit-bashing and creation of mesh assemblies (prefabs) from Marketplace assets.

Work During COVID-19
In order to keep our employees, candidates and community safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of our teams are working from home within Canada, with plans to a return in a hybrid capacity later in 2022. All interviewing, onboarding, and most work will take place remotely for the foreseeable future.
