Technical Artist: Dynamic Art (Mid / Senior)

Rockstar North is on the lookout for talented Technical Artists who possess a passion for inventing and improving workflows to enhance game development. As part of the Technical Art team, you will work closely with Artists across all studios to ensure they can efficiently create and refine Art to the highest standard expected for our titles.
This is a full-time permanent position based out of Rockstar’s state of the art development studio in Edinburgh, Scotland.
WHAT WE DO
- Bring innovation and resolution to technical problems and challenges throughout Art production - from content creation through to the game (across multiple platforms).
- We design, create and maintain highly complex character, weapons, props, vehicles and animal rigs that bring our 3D assets to life.
- Provide general support for Art team and document/share solutions/knowledge with wider team.
- Proactively use knowledge and experience to identify and solve problems before they affect the Art team.
- Work closely with fellow Technical Artists as part of wider global team working on interconnected tools and systems.
- Collaborate and communicate with other departments (aside from the Art department) such as Animation, Tools and Runtime (Engine) teams.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- This is a generalist Technical Artist role within Dynamic Art. The candidate will be involved in a wide variety of technical tasks related to character content creation pipelines.
- Manage automation and handle large amounts of pipeline metadata.
- Work with other Technical Artists streamlining our pipeline and scalability of our Character Art production workflows.
- Work with the team organizing, documenting and maintaining libraries for interacting with character setups from a tooling standpoint.
- Push forward Technical Art processes and standards to improve our ability to deliver quality tools and pipelines; code building, unit testing.
- Work with other Technical Artists and Engineers improving workflows and tools used internally by departments such as Design, Character Art, Rigging and Animation.
- Staying current with latest technologies/research ongoing in the field to help keep our dynamic art visuals and pipelines at the cutting-edge.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A relevant degree or professional experience in the game industry as a Technical Artist, Rigger, Technical Animator or similar/related position.
- A demo reel and online portfolio that demonstrates exceptional skills creating motion controls for animation, complex deformation and skinning of body and face of characters and creatures.
SKILLS
- 3+ years of production experience using game engines (e.g. Unreal/Unity or proprietary tech) with relation to Character and Animation.
- Experience using DCC packages in game pipelines (e.g 3dsMax, Maya, Houdini, Blender).
- Experience with creating, managing and manipulating markup languages (XML, etc).
- Experience using image manipulation software like Photoshop, Substance.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to think outside the box.
- Strong communication, self-management, and organizational skills.
- Effective time management skills to meet deadlines and milestones.
PLUSES
Please note that these are desirable skills and are not required to apply for the position.
- Experience with Python (standalone or within the context of a relevant DCC) is highly advantageous.
- Experience with C# and .NET Core/Framework is highly advantageous.
- Experience using source control software (i.e. Perforce, Git) and working on a code base collaboratively.
- Professional experience as an Artist or Animator in games.
- Professional experience working and developing in a multi-platform, multi-project environment.
- Professional experience working in a large team spread across multiple locations and time zones.
