Tech Lead / Engineering Manager - VALORANT
2 years ago
Established in 2020, the Singapore Studio is Riot’s second international game development studio. Working together with our Hong Kong Studio, Riot has been expanding our footprint in Asia and accelerating our talent growth to develop games that deliver great experiences to our players. Our mission is to “scale Riot’s games to hyper-serve players.”
We partner with our LA headquarters on game development for League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, and Legends of Runeterra. We’re also building teams for VALORANT and Project L, our take on a fighting game. The Singapore Studio is seeking talented, passionate Rioters with backgrounds in all areas of game development to build games that make it better to be a player.
We’re focused on working together to promote individual autonomy, ownership, collaboration, and inclusivity, so every Rioter can be their best while we boldly pursue games.
That's where you come in
Riot engineers bring deep knowledge of specific technical areas but also value the opportunity to work in many broader domains. As an engineering manager, you’ll also dive into projects that focus on team cohesiveness and cross-team goals. You’ll lead cross discipline project teams with a clear illustration of extraordinary engineering practices.
VALORANT is Riot’s take on a character-based tactical shooter (for more info on VALORANT click here! ). In this role, leading the VALORANT Engineering Team, you will be responsible for building and improving the full stack of Game Modes in VALORANT: from scalable backend services to the performant game client and server tech. You will collaborate heavily with Design and Product Management to build in and out of game systems that create new and exciting ways to engage with VALORANT.
Responsibilities:
- Create, review, and reframe an engineering vision with the team and key stakeholders including the Technology, Product, and Process Leads.
- Continuously improve the software engineering quality and efficiency for delivering player facing features.
- Be excited to span the entire VALORANT tech stack - from our Golang services and infrastructure internals to our client/server game systems in C++ and UE4 blueprints. We’re not looking for someone who’s an expert across the board, but you’ll need to get comfortable leading across a broad technology stack.
- Collaborate effectively with art, design, and other disciplines within game development.
- Identify, recruit, interview, and hire software engineers to help teams scale effectively.
- Build and manage strong relationships between disciplines
- Lead, grow, and coach team members to build talent over the long term
- Manage the health and performance of the engineering team with empathy and authenticity, building trust, and inspiring them to overcome challenges.
- Demonstrate a high bar of craft excellence for your team
- Cultivate your team's culture of collaboration, creativity, and passion for game making
Required Qualifications:
- 8+ years experience as a software engineer, having shipped code in C++ & preferably Golang (or Java) - You ideally have experience on the client side beyond web technologies (e.g. game clients or mobile apps)
- 2+ years experience directly leading, coaching, and growing an engineering team
- Expertise in prioritization frameworks, scoping and determining work (processes), and setting an engineering vision for the team
- Experience leading and functioning in ambiguous, collaborative environments with team members of several levels, disciplines, and locations
- Experience building reliable, scalable, and maintainable software systems
- Experience with software development, including shipping one or more products on large code bases that span a range of platforms and tools
- Affinity with games
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with Unreal Engine
- Strong affinity with the FPS/Shooter Genre
For this role, you’ll find success through craft expertise, a collaborative spirit, and decision-making that prioritizes the delight of players. We will be looking at your past studies, experience, and your personal relationship with games. If you embody player empathy and care about the experience of players, this could be the role for you!
Our Perks:
- Full relocation support
- Full health insurance for you, your spouse and children
- Open paid time off
- Retirement benefits with company matching
- Life insurance, parental leave, plus short-term and long-term disability
- Play Fund so you can broaden and deepen your knowledge of our players and community through games
- We will double down on your donations of time and money to non-profits
