Job Description
The Molasses Flood is looking for a Systems Designer to design and implement the gameplay systems in our new game. Possible areas of focus range from economy and retention, to meta, to 3Cs gameplay, to life sim and social systems. Our ideal candidate has experience designing game systems, knows how to communicate these designs clearly across disciplines, and is a self driven problem solver. Most importantly, you care deeply for the player, understand what motivates and inspires them, and know how to build systems that fulfill those needs.
This is a full time position. Senior and mid level developers may work remotely within the continental US, or hybrid (Tues/Thurs in our office in the Boston area, and other 3 days per week WFH). Relocation assistance is available.
Responsibilities
- Propose innovative and fun gameplay systems that follow the game direction and vision.
- Communicate and collaborate across departments as it pertains to systems: work closely with engineers, artists, sound designers, and production in managing the prioritization, implementation, and scope of the game’s systems.
- Design, prototype, script, iterate on and polish game systems and features.
- Work closely with our gameplay programmers on system prototyping and implementation, and ensure that the gameplay functionality, combat systems, and overall gameplay experience are carried through to completion at the highest possible quality.
Qualifications
- Proven success in creating compelling and innovative gameplay mechanics.
- Understanding programming/scripting in game design and experience with game editors and game design tools.
- Extensive knowledge of current game titles, as well as movies and other visual arts, to use as reference for crafting and communicating original ideas.
- The ability to communicate fluently with engineering, art, narrative and production.
- Candidates must have a US work permit or citizenship.
- Curiosity, kindness, and a positive and professional can-do attitude.
Nice to Haves
- Unreal Engine 4 experience
- Any kind of scripting experience, be it visual (such as Blueprint) or text-based (such as Python, Lua, or C#)
- Design experience with systems heavy action games

We were founded by industry veterans in 2014, and since then have created The Flame in the Flood and Drake Hollow.
