Software Engineering Director

Summary
We are currently looking to hire a software engineering director to lead our engineering department across the globe from our London location and help build and expand our game portfolio and supporting tools and technologies. With leadership experience and a solid technical background as a software engineer, the ideal candidate will work closely with the technical leadership team and the business units to drive engineering excellence for a worldwide engineering team to support high performance using agile and lean methodologies.
Your teams are responsible for building and maintaining our suite of mobile games within a matrix organisation where each development team is part of a business unit with a certain level of autonomy to drive innovation and engage their player base.
This is a role that will suit an empathetic technology leader, who can focus on driving a candid feedback culture, mentor and coach engineers and have a focus on great people and cross-team practices.
The mobile games are for iOS and Android platforms, and are developed in Unity and C#. The main tech stack for the backend is currently on Ruby on Rails running on the cloud. We are moving to microservices and refreshing our technology stack over the next year with a new technology stack primarily Java-based, React and NodeJs. Our development support runs on Jenkins for CI, Applivery, Artifactory, Git for source control, and Jira/Atlassian for project management.What you'll do
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership, management, coaching and mentoring for the entire software engineering team.
- Direct and manage software engineering resource allocation, schedules and budget in a matrix environment.
- Manage and oversee joint development with 3rd party vendors along with outsourced development.
- Provide suitable decision making for product development and software engineering while maintaining sensitivity to constraints and business needs.
- Stimulate hiring, training, performance reviews and career plans for the software engineering team.
- Present employee development, mentoring, coaching and team building.
- Participate actively in software development processes
- Facilitate software development teams in accomplishing optimal team performance.
- Assist in the removal of technical obstacles, help enhance team processes, handle resource issues and interact with various stakeholders to ensure smooth software development lifecycles
Requirements
- Experience working closely with Product Owners, Quality Assurance, Platform teams, Server teams and other leaders to ensure the department is delivering world-class technology.
- Experience advocating and promoting modern, agile software development practices.
- Experience with full stack web environments developed in Ruby on Rails and similar technology stacks
- Experience with development using cloud based technologies
- GCP experience a big plus or alternative cloud environments.
- Experience with managing multiple teams as a director of engineering or in a similar senior-level position at an engineering department
- Experience of influencing across team & wider teams
- Experience in mobile games development using Unity and C# a big plus
- BSc/MSc in Engineering, Computer Science or relevant field
