Senior Software Engineer - Client, Pokémon GO

Pokémon GO is looking for skilled game client engineers. Senior Client Engineer are responsible for the client architecture, contribute to the development process and drive game client development for Pokémon GO, ensuring engineering’s dedication of quality and efficiency.
As a Senior Client Engineer, you will work together with Game Designers to design and develop game features for Pokémon GO. You will also work closely with Pokémon GO server engineers to ensure solutions are high quality and scalable as well as ensure the Niantic engineering organization constantly improves its development of best practices. There will be the opportunity to mentor junior client engineers on technical solutions. You will operate directly with studio engineering managers and partner platform teams directly with studio engineering managers and partnering platform teams.
Pokémon GO is a 1st party development studio within Niantic. As a Senior Client Developer, you will have an opportunity to work on a diverse set of client features. From the social aspects of Pokémon GO integrating shared service technologies which enable our players to interact in a safe and respectful manner that is both fun and engaging. To the features that allow players to explore the world of Pokémon GO. Creating experiences that further enhance the world of Pokémon GO and drive players to get out and explore the world. Or possibly the features that allow players to interact in the cooperative and competitive interactions of Pokémon GO, Player versus Player (PvP), Raid and Gym battling. Client engineers in this area work closely with server engineers to ensure that the moment player experience is responsive and engaging. We are constantly improving all aspects of the ecosystem that is Pokémon GO.
Responsibilities
- Build engaging features on the Unity game client.
- Debug sophisticated projects built on Unity.
- Perform load and performance testing, participate in code reviews, write unit tests, and conduct troubleshooting to ensure uptime for live systems.
- Collaborate with cross-functional team members and stakeholders to cultivate strong working relationships with project team members, including regular and reliable attendance and participation in meetings.
Deliverables
- Develop, adapt, and execute long-term technical strategy to achieve key business objectives.
- Works as part of the PGO engineering team with cross-functional partners in Business, Art & Design, Production and Marketing to develop and deliver on technology to improve Pokémon GO.
- Ability to experiment and improve when it comes to tools, technology, and processes in engineering.
- Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical team members across a variety of disciplines and teams within the company.
- Adapts to changing priorities with ease.
Qualifications
- You have a BS in Computer Science or other technical major, or equivalent experience.
- You have published at least one mobile app to the app store (iOS or Google).
- You can work in multiple programming languages; C# for Unity, Java in Android, Obj-C in iOS, C/C++ mobile native.
- You are proficient in Unity.
- At least 4+ years of professional software development experience or equivalent.
- Ability to work as a member of a cross-functional team working with game designers, producers, artist and UX designers.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced hybrid environment and handle stress appropriately and/or ability to solve practical problems and be sufficiently adaptable to handle dynamic situations with little advance notice.
- Experience working on cross-functional teams with ability to communicate effectively through written and verbal communications, including synchronous interactions with others.
Plus If...
- You have experience working with a ‘AAA’ game engines (Unreal, Unity, Lumberyard, Frostbite, etc.) or proprietary game engine.
- You have work experience with Unity on mobile devices in Android and iOS.
- You have 3D game engine experience.
- Experience in optimization, systems architecture, profiling, tooling, and reporting.
- You are experienced with profiling and optimization for mobile.
