Sumo Nottingham develops characterful, accessible and innovative action/adventure and racing games for console and PC. We are part of Sumo Digital Ltd., an independent UK developer working with some of the world’s biggest publishers including Microsoft, Sony and Sega.

It’s an exciting time to be part of Sumo, winners of the Develop: Star Awards 2019 Best Studio and GI Biz 2020 Best Places to Work; big things are on the horizon and we want you to be part of our continued journey. Join us!

Diversity Commitment

Sumo Nottingham is made up of a diverse mix of fantastic people, although sometimes, some groups are still under-represented. We are working to remove obstacles that can make it difficult for those groups to progress their careers in the games industry. We welcome applications from under-represented people in the gaming industry, including, but not limited to BAME, LGBQT+, women, people with physical disabilities, neurodiversity or mental health issues, and parents or carers.

What you’ll be doing

You will be working to design and develop features needed for the game title you’re working on. The set of features you will work on will be broad, potentially including gameplay, UI, audio, and the underlying systems needed to make the game features work. You’ll research new techniques when necessary, and apply them to your development efforts.

You will estimate the time and cost for implementation of these features, and will be responsible for tracking implementation effort and meeting the budgets you have proposed. You’ll potentially be mentoring and managing one or two programmers to help achieve your goals.

What we’re looking for

You’ll be familiar with programming in C++ and be able to demonstrate experience of applying your knowledge to games or games technology. You should have experience of working on Unreal Engine 4, ideally on an online multiplayer title, and be able to show understanding of its architecture and a broad range of systems that it contains. You will be able to apply your experience to make the most appropriate choices when implementing new gameplay systems based on the engine.

You will have a positive, curious, and determined approach to completing the work you’re assigned. You’ll be a great communicator, thriving on working with others to drive the quality of the game and to share your knowledge and experience along the way.

Who you’ll be working with

You’ll be working within a team of programmers as part of a multidisciplinary games team. You will also work with game designers to define and iterate on the features you’re developing, artists to support their creation of the art content in the game, and production and project management staff to prioritise your work and keep track of your progress.

You’ll be supported in your work by other senior programmers and the lead programmer on your team.

Where you’ll be working

Nottingham has lots to see and do, including a huge choice of bars and restaurants, art galleries and numerous cultural events. There are several large parks in and around the city (including Wollaton Park, containing Batman’s house!), and it sits on the doorstep of the beautiful Peak District area. It has excellent road and rail links to the North and South of the country, with London less than two hours away by train.

We support your personal development through access to training resources and time to work on them.
