Senior Texture/Surfacing Artist

inXile entertainment is an Xbox Game Studio led by Brian Fargo. We specialize in deep, reactive, and narrative-focused RPGs, but also love exploring other genres. Our studio is filled with passionate developers who love making games, and playing them.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Surfacing Artist to join us in creating environments for a high-profile game. Working from our Southern California office, you’ll collaborate with artists, designers, and engineers to deliver best in class game art.

Requirements:

  • Experienced in multiple surfacing applications and is advanced in Substance Designer
  • Strong traditional art skills with demonstrable experience in producing surfaces in a variety of styles
  • Ability to research, document, concept, manage, and design large and small projects
  • Experience using unreal materials and physically based rendering (PBR) workflows
  • Outstanding concept interpretation skills with the ability to design and define the undefined
  • Solid grasp of game asset creation techniques that relate to surfacing
  • Ability to sculpt surface detail, shape, and form in sculpting applications like Zbrush
  • Ability to quickly understand where detail is needed and where it is not
  • Hands on experience with unwrap workflows on a variety of asset types
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate professionally with peers working on related assets
  • Advanced baking workflows in multiple packages for a variety of asset types
  • Shipped multiple games using the Unreal game engine as a surfacing or texture artist
  • Portfolio demonstrating a variety of high-quality surfaces and textures
  • Examples of high-quality tiling, masked, and texture ‘swizzled’ assets
  • Examples of efficient node-based materials and non-destructive surfacing workflows.

Responsibilities:

  • Help edit, improve, and create assets for material library to enable efficient workflows
  • Create benchmark environment surfaces that set high visual and technical standards
  • Imagine, craft, and produce textures, surfaces, and materials that range from realistic to slightly stylized
  • Work closely with the project Art Director and Leads to ensure the vision of the game is achieved
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary departments to hit visual and functional goals
  • Seek out and define environment iteration improvement and efficiency efforts
  • Create and publish workflow and process documentation
  • Provide written and verbal feedback to artists that are internal and external
  • Mentor and train artists to promote best practices and achievable workflows
  • Understand and communicate visual direction through words and images

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Training and tutoring skills are a plus
  • Experience in photography and photogrammetry
  • Houdini and asset creation for Unreal
  • Experience working on a first and\or third person game
  • Previous experience working in feature film or tv animation pipeline
  • Bachelor’s degree in Art & Design
