Senior Software Engineering Manager, Defence

Improbable has created SpatialOS: a networking solution combining low latency, tools for faster iteration, and a ready-to-go architecture capable of supporting innovative games.

Now the Improbable Defence division, building on the backbone of SpatialOS, has combined world class scientific modelling, market leading AI, mission specific user interfaces and a uniquely flexible and secure deployment model to create a powerful simulation platform tailored to the needs of the military.

Our mission? To enable the most realistic and effective military simulations ever experienced, making defence users more effective on operations and decreasing the cost of military preparedness.

Is to provide engineering leadership directly to the UK engineering managers (2) and broader body of engineers in the core engineering heart of the Defence unit of Improbable. You will be key anchor point for growth in 2020, with these teams set to grow significantly as the Defence business doubles in size.

Reporting to the UK-based Director of Engineering, you will play a significant role in developing our leaders of tomorrow, shepherding delivery and contributing to our vision.

Ultimately you will guide these teams towards our multi-year mission and goal; combining our distributed compute technology, massive-scale simulations, advanced probabilistic modelling and AI to help selected governments meet the threats they face.

Areas for Impact

• You are a leader of leaders, establishing and managing a scalable organisational design, that runs a significant segment of the business or customer experience
• You will grow successful senior engineers and engineering managers through collaborative development planning, coaching, and empowerment through strategic goals.
• You will proactively develop and promote top performers, particularly growing Principal Engineers.
• You will play a key role in performance reviews and promo reviews. You confidently handle complex employee situations, soliciting input from People and your manager when necessary.
• You have a strategic focus, yet retain an appropriate level of hands-on management. You empower your managers and engineers to independently execute. You provide context and visibility into the reasoning behind decisions.
• You are able to decompose complex problems into straight-forward solutions. You consistently bring strong, data-driven business and technical judgment to decisions.
• You understand the functionality, architecture, business drivers, and technologies behind the products and systems you own. You collaborate with EMs and Senior SWEs/Principals to determine the long-term viability of your software architecture, both from a business and technology standpoint.

We'd like to hear from you if you identify with the following:

• 3+ years as a senior manager, building and leading rapidly scaling multiple engineering teams or groups.
• Passion for developing, mentoring and coaching managers.
• Relevant software and/or systems engineering background.
• Previous experience working with customers, both internal and external.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Experience developing hiring strategies & goals and aiding recruitment process.
