Epic Games creates and deploys advanced computer-vision and machine learning technologies to transform the production and consumption of digital media. At Quixel we are helping our customers to capture the world, so that they can build new worlds from that. We are looking for a research manager with the passion to help drive this mission forward through cutting edge applied research.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
An exciting opportunity for an experienced research leader to join Epic Games Research & Development, a world-leading provider of reality capture, texture and geometry processing technology based from our Amsterdam office or remote worldwide.
The ideal candidate will bring passion for digitizing the world and experience in the fields of computer graphics, computer vision, and machine learning. You will lead the team that develops and applies algorithms in the domain of segmentation, reconstruction, modeling and computer vision to help us build the next generation of automated model generation from reality. In This Role You Will
- Lead the research team at Quixel spanning different focus areas such material segmentation, texture and geometry repair for the content creation pipeline
- Work with the other Epic research teams and senior management to create technical roadmaps for reality capture & machine learning solutions
- Lead the execution of research projects by drafting proposals, selecting methods, supervising the teams, managing budgets, and presenting findings.
- Be responsible for all projects, from initial identification, investigation and concept development through to delivering useable solutions that can be further developed into products
- Ensure research into new and existing processes, technologies and techniques
- Partner with Epic projects and products to deploy and deliver solutions and new valuable capabilities to Epic products.
- Develop ideas for further investigation
- Review the research that others have done and what outcomes they have achieved to inform decision making process to decide direction to take
- Turn research prototypes into robust, well-engineered code which can be used in Epic’s products.
- Work on ‘special projects’: one-time projects requiring significant research innovation.
- Investigate, analyze and make recommendations to management regarding technology improvements, upgrades and modifications.
- Stay on top of the latest technologies which may be relevant to the company’s goals
- Work with the wider engineering community to develop and maintain good relationships with internal and external contacts at all levels including other companies, universities and research institutes
- Keep track of state of the art in academia and competitive software, distill the most relevant work
- Review competitors solutions, investigating the research activity of other companies, research institutes and universities to inform work being carried out
- Manage, coach and develop a high performing research team that meets agreed objectives and which delivers best practice results, added value and continuous improvements
- Manage and lead the team, ensuring adequate staffing levels, managing holiday allowances, recruitment, training, development, appraisal and daily supervision to maximize efficient productivity
- Consistently promote high standards through personal example and roll out through the team so that each member of the team understands the standards and behaviors expected of them
What We're Looking For
- PhD in Computer Science, Computer Graphics, Machine Learning or a related discipline
- 10+ years of experience in working with cross domain research and development teams
- Experience with leading a team of researchers to develop state of the art solutions
- Experience with creating technology roadmaps
- Research Experience demonstrated through publication in top-tier conferences and successful patent applications.
- Understanding of modern Machine Learning, Computer Graphics and Computer Vision concepts.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate with research and engineering teams.
Nice To Have Skills
- Software development experience in a commercial environment.
- Experience with a 3D animation package or rendering engine (e.g. Maya, Motionbuilder, Unreal Engine).
