Your Mission
As a quantitative researcher you will join a young, talented, and diverse team of user researchers to lead and execute research and evaluation efforts on the largest gaming franchises in the world. This role could be remote or in person at the Activision User Research Center (AURC), currently located in Woodland Hills California or another Activision work site. In this role, you’ll help provide modeling, statistical, and telemetry-based insights to guide the evolution of our games and tools based on player feedback, and help to determine strategic investments in technology and training to help us level-up our offerings and contributions to our partners throughout Activision. By the end of your first year, you’ll be comfortable creating and supporting dashboards to answer specific needs, supporting other researchers by providing quantitative expertise, and building and analyzing models to derive new insights to share with devs and teammates.
Priorities can often change in a fast-paced environment like ours, so this role includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:
- Carry out research using a variety of methods, including data analysis, balance testing, survey design, significance testing, regression modelling, and exploratory research.
- Process and improve statistical models using historical data within a game mode, franchise, or across our own or comparable titles.
- Create actionable data-informed reports including the creation of visualization dashboards and/or graphs to supplement qualitative research and to inform and educate stakeholders.
- Help implement pre-launch telemetry across a variety of projects.
- Coordinate user research findings with dev studios and the Game Analytics team.
- Conduct and oversee quantitative user experience research for a variety of game projects, including all stages from planning to execution.
- Provide and discuss research results directly with dev teams for implementation.
- Produce design suggestions based on observation, research, and expertise.
- Oversee the creation and execution of large-scale surveys such as alpha/beta release surveys and focused external consumer insights research.
- Educate fellow research staff on the use of quantitative data and collection methods.
Player Profile
Experience
- 3 or more years’ experience in similar roles, ideally within the game industry (exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis).
- Deep knowledge and experience applying quantitative and statistical methods to a variety of exploratory and diagnostic research questions.
- Strong understanding of psychometric methods, including scale and survey item validity.
- Experience with and passion for video games is a must, and an ideal candidate will be well versed in at least one of Activision’s titles.
Knowledge & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree required (branches of psychology, human computer interaction, human factors, information technology, statistics, or related field). Advanced degree is preferred.
- Some knowledge of scripting languages and analysis tools (e.g., SQL, Python, PHP, R, SPSS).
- Deep knowledge of quantitative research methods, including proficiency in inferential statistical methods and modeling.
Key Attributes
- Must have a passion for video games, especially FPS or PvP multiplayer games.
- Entrepreneurial mindset: ready to seek out opportunities to expand the value and scope of our quantitative offerings through relationship building and technical or methodological innovation.
- Excellent interpersonal communication (both written and verbal).
Extra Points:
Experience
- Talent comes from many diverse backgrounds, so experience with user research, UX, or game testing is a plus, but not a requirement.
- Experience with first person shooters on console or PC is a plus.
Knowledge & Skills
- Advanced expertise with data visualization software is a plus.
- Familiarity with qualitative research methods is a plus.
Key Attributes
- Interest in educating, training, and mentoring junior researchers is a plus.
