Senior Gameplay Engineer (Combat)
Ascendant Studios is looking to add an experienced gameplay engineer to help us develop the combat systems for our upcoming original AAA IP. They must have experience programing enemy and player abilities in Unreal Engine, and must be familiar with the Gameplay Abilities system and replication in UE4. They must have an understanding and love for gameplay design and be an excellent collaborator with other engineers as well as combat designers and other departments to craft a combat experience that keeps players engaged for the duration of their playtime.
This is a full time position. We are all currently working remotely due to Covid-19, but once we return the position can either be based in our office in San Rafael, CA, or remain fully remote.
What you'll do:
- Collaborate with a cross disciplinary team to design, prototype, and iterate on combat systems, including enemy and player attacks and abilities, meta systems, and overall player feel.
- Work with other engineers, combat designers, and production to scope and plan combat related features.
- Make single player combat abilities multiplayer compliant.
- Assist level designers in setting up and troubleshooting their combat encounters
- Troubleshoot, bug fix, and document new combat features
- Give, receive, and act on daily constructive feedback with minimal supervision
- Accurately access your workload, proactively communicate with the team about potential problems or new developments
- Write beautiful, scalable, shippable combat code
Who you are:
- 8+ years experience working in games, with 4+ years working player and enemy combat systems
- 4+ years working with Unreal Engine, including gameplay abilities and replication
- 5+ years of experience working with C++
- Experienced the entire game development pipeline, from idea generation and prototyping to ship and post-launch support
- Solid foundational programming skills (algorithms, data structures, OOP, etc.)
- Ability to work independently, problem solve on the fly, and collaborate efficiently across disciplines in a small, fast moving team
Bonus points:
- Work on a title for the PS5, Xbox Series X or S a big plus
- BA/BS degree in Computer Science, mathematics, or equivalent field
