The Senior Counsel – The Patents Team is responsible for providing legal support to all aspects of the Company’s patent matters. The focus is on patents, utility and design, along with trade secret, open source and other technology-based IP matters. The candidate is also expected to be knowledgeable with respect to other IP areas such as trademarks and copyrights and assist or work collaboratively with the trademark and copyright team as appropriate. The successful individual will provide best-in-class legal services efficiently, timely and in a cost-effective manner by anticipating, addressing, and creatively resolving legal issues and providing counsel in a manner that optimizes business results. The position is based in the U.S. and may be located in the Las Vegas office, or may work remotely.What You'll Do
- Serve as the primary legal partner for the Company’s patent matters as directed by the Associate General Counsel – Patents
- Assist with the management of the patent and design portfolio related activities across the full patent/design lifecycle, with a particular focus on Australia and the US
- Engage with and maintain ongoing relationships with internal clients and outside counsel
- Conduct product clearance including providing freedom to operate advice and/or commercially feasible design-arounds
- Deliver strategic analysis and insights of competitor IP portfolios
- Lead or assist with infringement and validity investigations
- Train and encourage IP protection efforts with technology divisions resulting in new IP through the Company’s invention disclosure program
- Monitor and enforce the Company’s IP portfolio
- Send cease and desist letters when necessary
- Work with other in-house counsel to integrate the Company’s IP matters into other functions, such as business development matters, and be capable of identifying and/or valuing competitor IP
- Structure and draft technology transactions and agreements (or assist other in-house counsel in doing so)
- Become an essential strategic partner to the business by aiding in their strategic goals and objectives, making internal customer experience a competitive advantage
- Analyze legal issues impacting the business, evaluate options and recommend mitigating actions
- Deliver timely and solution-focused legal services while managing cash flow and achieving budget targets
- Champion a commitment to honesty, integrity, and responsible corporate behavior by fostering a compliance culture within the organization where employees feel comfortable reporting potential violations or misconduct
What We're Looking For
- A Juris Doctorate from an accredited U.S. law school and a member in good standing with a U.S. state bar
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Electrical or Computer preferred), Computer Science or related discipline
- Minimum 7+ years’ experience as a patent attorney either with a law firm, corporation, or both
- Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office
- Experience in the technology sector. Gaming industry experience preferred
- Comfort and familiarity with existing and emerging technology
- Ability to work autonomously as well as cross-functionally with other teams and to influence and build effective working relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization
- Ability to manage competing priorities, simultaneously drive numerous projects, identify, and resolve business issues, and earn the confidence of executive business partners
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation, drafting and negotiation skills
- Exceptional business judgment and analytical skills
- Strong investigative and IP research skills
- Knowledge of patent docketing and database systems
- Experience handling all aspects of intellectual property
- Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced, metric-driven environment and adapt quickly to changing priorities
- Ability to uphold and demonstrate the highest level of integrity in all situations and recognize standards required by a regulated business
