Senior Character Artist

Overview
Roundhouse Studios is looking for a talented Senior Character Artist to join our talented team of developers in Madison, Wisconsin. In this role you are responsible for creating and texturing highly detailed 3D character models for our AAA games. You will be part of our Character Art team and report to our Lead Character Artist. Candidates should have a strong understanding of character modeling as it applies to game play and should be able to successfully execute those ideas in engine.
Responsibilities
- Create and texture highly detailed 3D character models for AAA games
- Work directly with Art Director, Lead Character Artist and Concept team in the creation of visually stunning character assets
- Collaborate with tech-artists, animators and designers to bring visually compelling characters to life within design and technical limitations
- Contribute to the creative process through original ideas and inspiration
- Provide concept sculpts for character and character asset development during pre-production
- Closely follow art style guides and design concepts
- Participate in critiquing your work and the work of other artists; help mentor junior artists
- Write and maintain tools, workflows, and pipeline documentation
- Interface with outsourcers to help convey character art direction as needed
- Work with the entire development team in an energetic and creative environment
Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional industry experience as a character artist
- At least two AAA published games credited as a senior character artist
- In depth knowledge of character modeling as related to animation and game development
- Excellent sculpting skills in Zbrush or Mudbox
- Texturing skills in Substance Painter or similar software
- Advanced experience in both hard-surface and organic modeling
- Strong knowledge of human and animal anatomy
- Advanced understanding of drapery as it relates to costume design
- Thorough understanding of character art pipelines and AAA game integration
- Experienced understanding of PBR workflows, including hair and skin shaders
- A strong understanding of rigging and animation principles
- Knowledge of industry software tools & pipelines (Zbrush, 3dsMax, Maya, Substance Painter/Designer and Photoshop)
- Ability to take and expand upon visual direction with little oversight
- Team player with a strong work ethic and a collaborative attitude
Preferred Skills
- Traditional art skills including sketching, illustration and painting
- Familiarity with Hair and Fur development and workflows
- Experience with Hair and Cloth simulation
- Experience with Marvelous Designer
- Experience with UE
- Experience with photogrammetry and scan data
- Understanding of Costume design and construction
- Passion for games and game development
