Research Delivery Manager
Improbable’s Research team is growing from six to fifteen people with a substantial internal investment in research to shape the future of synthetic environments.
This growth will bring the need to spread the management and co-ordination of research activities between three posts: the Director of Research Partnerships will lead the team overall and manage senior researchers. The Principal Research Engineer will oversee engineering capability and manage the research engineers. The Research Delivery Manager (this post) will play a coordinating role, monitoring delivery, surfacing and facilitating decisions on priorities across the team, and will manage the junior researchers
Areas for Impact
- Manage, support and grow your team of junior Research Scientists through collaborative development, planning, coaching, empowerment through strategic goals, and hiring.
- Contribute to the overall vision, strategic direction and career path definition of the Research function in the organisation.
- Support Research stream leads by challenging deliverable status, anticipating and helping to remove blockers and identifying and engaging with the right stakeholders to mitigate unexpected issues.
- Work with Research stream leads, Product, Engineering and Customer Project teams to monitor Research progress against the Product Roadmap and Customer Project plans.
- Bring strong, data-driven business and technical judgement to support the Director of Research Partnerships and Principal Research Engineer in making decisions on priorities of work and task allocation across the entire team.
- Create a collaborative mindset across the whole Research team and a focus on what is important where the team can take ownership and be accountable.
- Surface and clarify the decisions that need to be made to ensure we adequately resource the most important Research activity at any one time, and that we align technical efforts across Research streams, ensuring parallel efforts are pulled together.
We'd like to hear from you if you identify with the following:
- Experience leading a high-performing, happy team researching or building complex modern technology, ideally with a simulation, AI or data science focus.
- Experience delivering work to demanding requirements in a very complex and rapidly growing environment by facilitating and leading a continual planning process, prioritising between goals and hitting deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills, with experience of developing successful working relationships and managing a range of stakeholders including partners, customers, suppliers, senior management and people in other roles such as engineers and product managers.
- As an experienced people manager, you will have a clear focus on managing the development and growth of researchers. You are considerate, humble, a servant-leader, motivated by the success of your team.
- With a high level of emotional intelligence, and an ability to listen with empathy, you can navigate tricky situations, having tough conversations where necessary
- Experience working with a range of stakeholders including partners, customers, suppliers and senior management
- Coming from a scientific background, you are able to leverage that knowledge to coach and develop your reports.
Nb: While we think the above experience could be important, we can’t predict the future and so we’re keen to hear from applicants that believe they have valuable experience. If you identify with the team & mission, but not all of the suggestions, then please still apply
