Job Purpose:
As a QA Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring our game systems' high production quality and ensuring these are robust and consistently checked. You will be involved in high-profile and challenging projects, ensuring that we successfully deliver enhancements to both content and platform updates.
You will have full ownership of quality across designated game components, which can include the game engine. Responsible for going more in-depth than user acceptance testing, you will conduct integration, component and system testing within a development environment.
The QA Engineer is expected to have the ability to parse a codebase for QA information, identity code paths and data being used, and understand the relationship between client and server.
Main Duties & Responsibilities:
- Execute functional tests in a grey box environment, which mirrors the development IDE.
- Perform pre-release validations of technical updates at the engine and content level.
- Proactively test owned areas and take a feature from backlog to release.
- Perform non-functional testing, such as Performance and Compatibility.
- Document test coverage through detailed test plans and schedules.
- Represent QA in agile ceremonies and team meetings.
- Work with developers and QA Analysts within scrum teams to provide technical guidance.
- Provide advice to developers to make their work more testable.
- Work with outsourcing QA teams to achieve the best possible result, including creating documentation, mentoring where appropriate.
- Contribute to the roll-out of world-class test automation frameworks by utilizing provided scripts and giving feedback.
- Assist Quality Engineering in pinpointing areas of the game that could be open to automation e.g. feature regression.
- Review stream/ branch merges and test around conflicts.
- Provide reporting of test effort, results, and risks, from both manual and automated tests.
- Conduct testing in development and release branches.
Essential Skills:
- Excellent analytical, interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience in formal software testing or video games testing.
- Familiarity with source control, such as GIT or Perforce.
- Experience with build software, such as Jenkins, Bamboo or TeamCity.
- Ability to work from technically tasks and translate them into actionable test cases.
- Ability to create debug test scripts to assist in the testing of complex features.
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding of testing methodologies and agile development.
- Ability to carry out risk assessments and professionally communicate these back to the team.
- Adept at costing, time estimation, and root cause analysis.
- Can interpret crash logs from multiple platforms, e.g. Windows, Mac OSX or Mobile.
- Ability to effectively perform destructive and exploratory testing without test case guidance with an eye for detail.
Desirable Skills:
- You have a computing or games related degree.
- You have experience using one or more of the following: Junit, Python, Java, C++.
- Excellent understanding of how games are built, the different components and disciplines that come together and how they relate.
- Has worked within game development environments such as Xcode, Visual Studio, Unreal, Unity etc.
- Expert understanding of software QA and games development practices and terminology (ideally concerning mobile games or live-supported games).
