Product Designer (Contract), Defence
We believe in the power of scientific simulations coupled with cutting-edge gaming technology to transform decision making and planning in highly uncertain, rapidly evolving, complex environments. In the National Security and Defence sector, a unique opportunity exists to impact high stakes real-world outcomes by enabling decision makers to explore, interact and experiment with rich simulations of interconnected real world systems – what we refer to as single synthetic environments. Our goal is to enable the large scale adoption of single synthetic environments by governments and international institutions, to promote a collective path towards a shared, more accurate understanding of the world.
Improbable Defence develops a software platform that enables the creation of these single synthetic environments, aiming to capture for the first time the multi-domain complexity that is pervasive in modern military operations, and to provide a full simulation-supported workflow; from understanding a scenario, to planning an operation, rehearsing and training.
Single synthetic environments give decision makers a constantly improving picture on how to best prepare for crises and threats. Improbable’s platform offers new capabilities to the defence industry with a library of models, enabling defence developers to reuse and repurpose existing models and build new models of the real world in a fast, efficient and iterative way.
Your Mission
is to join the existing product design team from the period 4th January to 2nd April 2021, to provide additional support for the complex products that we are building.
We are building a dashboard (currently named Fusion ) for operational planning. There are various parts to this that are worth unpacking.
Firstly, Fusion allows users to create and design plans for scenarios. This includes physical elements such as placing units on a map as well orchestrating their movements over time, but extends much further to include other domains and elements, such as economic, information and diplomatic interventions.
Fusion is also the interface to the simulation engine. Users can run complex models, many times, at scale. A critical part of value we deliver for clients is letting them leverage complex data generated by the models for better analytics. This involves designing and building solutions to how we visualise information, both geospatially and temporally. The data visualisation work is done in close collaboration with scientific modellers in the division.
Areas for Impact
- The primary project for this role will be developing a coherent and scalable system for map and data visualisation
- Generate ideas, create prototypes and conduct testing sessions with our customer and user community
- Work closely with product managers and engineering teams to define and prioritise features
- Collaborate with engineers to define implementation details of your design
- Contribute to our design system
We'd like to hear from you if you identify with the following:
- This role requires excellent visual and interaction design skills. You need to have proven experience of designing and shipping intuitive and attractive interfaces of highly complex products.
- Experience with data visualisation and/or geographic information system (GIS) is highly desirable
- Fluent in modern product design approaches and foundational interaction design principles and patterns
- Strong prototyping skills at different fidelities
- Experience in B2B/enterprise products is beneficial
- Comfortable in working independently
- Comfortable working in a fast paced, highly iterative and collaborative environment
- Ability to work closely with engineers to support implementation (including writing user stories and acceptance criteria)
- Good appreciation of front-end technologies is an advantage
While we think the above experience could be important, we’re keen to hear from people that believe they have valuable experience to bring to the role. If you identify with the team and mission, but not all of our requirements, then please still apply!!
